Fish Bioenergetics

Bioenergetics processes limit the ecology of fish, but are difficult to measure. Modeling bioenergetics processes allows students to examine how fish respond to environmental change. These models also allow students to explore hypotheses for managing fishes or restoring their habitats.

The course will address the physiological ecology of fish relating to bioenergetics. Readings that communicate energetic processes in fish and the application of models will be assigned. Course assignments will consist of weekly readings and periodic problems to be solved. On-line discussions will address the physiology of fish relative to energetic processes, constraints imposed by environmental conditions, concepts of bioenergetics modeling and model applications.

Backyard Poultry

Raising chickens for meat and eggs is one of the easiest ways for a backyard gardener or small-scale homesteader to produce a healthy source of protein. Whether you raise chickens for meat and eggs, for veggie garden fertilizer, or just keep them as pets, chickens are a multi-beneficial species that are both easy and fun to raise.

This workshop covers the basics of how to raise chickens in your own backyard. (Other poultry will be mentioned but not covered in detail.) You will learn about breeds of birds, about the dual purpose of raising chickens for eggs and meat, and best methods of housing and feeding. You will have the opportunity to attend the Poultry Show at Redwood Acres to see many of the chicken breeds available. This will be followed by a presentation by Dr. Francine Bradley, UC Davis poultry specialist, who will discuss prevention of diseases, pests and bio-security.

Later in spring, at a date to be announced, you will have the opportunity to visit Wild Chick Farm in Arcata where instructor Sarah Brunner raises pastured poultry commercially for meat and eggs. In class she will discuss the housing structures, humane butchering, health benefits, and local marketing opportunities for pastured poultry.

Instructors also include Alan Bower and Deborah Giraud, UC farm advisors.

   Personal Development

Body Language

The study of movement is not only an important actor’s tool, but aids in one’s ability to communicate with others, transcending language and arriving at a more basic understanding of human behavior. This course will be a practical study of how and what humans communicate through movement during which students will learn to not only verbalize their observations, but also study how they themselves express through movement. Actor training techniques will be utilized in exercises that students will participate in and observe. Combined with readings and discussions about movement and body expression, we will examine physical expression experientially as well as debate its wider meanings and metaphors.
