Managing Time, People, & Priorities

Learn to use (and coach) easy and effective tools to improve time management, prioritization, workload balance, controlling interruptions, and delegation. Discover how to make better use of your resources and increase your influence over your own manager, your staff, and your organization.

Effective Communication & Interaction

Gain insight into your own and others’ orientations, priorities, and motives in carrying out work and relating to other people. Recognize how people differ, and better appreciate strengths different from your own. Discover how behavior changes during stress. Learn how to adapt your approach in order to communicate and influence more effectively. Improve your listening skills so that your own contributions will be better received. This course uses the American Management Association’s DISC survey, which allows you to diagnose your own style and learn to assess others’.

Motivation, Expectations & Constructive Feedback

Develop your staff and increase motivation by clearly communicating roles, responsibilities and boundaries, and by delivering timely feedback. Three forms of feedback are taught: recognizing and encouraging best performance; constructively asking for change; and receiving feedback gracefully, even when it is delivered unpleasantly.

Collaborative Performance Evaluations:
Would You Do Them If You Didn’t Have To?

The performance evaluation is potentially the most powerful tool at a manager’s disposal. It can be extremely motivating or demoralizing for both parties. Explore the advantages, disadvantages, and other options. Evaluate the value of a collaborative process: learn to prepare employees for a review which will increase motivation and productivity, to manage expectations during the session, and to create an atmosphere that encourages openness about concerns and plans for the future.

Janet Ruprecht spent 10 years as director of marketing for a successful start-up in the computer industry, a company ranked one of the best places to work in the U.S. When she was tapped by the founders to help keep it that way, she began by streamlining procedures across functions in order to increase profits. She further began to teach management, organizational and personal development skills workshops to the managers and employees of four sister companies. Upon returning to Humboldt County, she founded Actions Speak Louder to offer management skills training. She has trained local leaders in the business, government, non-profit, and educational sectors.
