Photographing Humboldt’s Murals & Street Art
Taking a walk through downtown Arcata and Eureka can feel like walking through an outdoor art gallery. The murals of Humboldt County tell magnificent painted stories on the sides of buildings.
Graffiti art comes in several forms and is undoubtedly embedded in urban culture. These art forms are beautiful and expressive and photographing them is a growing avenue of interest in the photography world.
This course will offer new and exciting ways to approach these visual treats. Capturing and documenting these city relics creates a lovely record of time, as images often disappear as time goes by.
This course includes a field trip. All participants are required to complete a Release of Liability form. See field trip information.

Twilight can be magical time to photograph, but can often yield disappointing results. In this class we will overcome under-exposed images and will test out and play with a variety of results that will teach new ways to interact with light as it turns from day into night.

Contemporary Photographers
In photography, so often we go back to the masters who created the photographic medium as an art form, that we forget there are masters in training right now. In this four-part series we will look at established and emerging contemporary photographers, how their work is relevant, and why their work is being collected in major institutions.
Explore some of the newer, prolific photographic artists of our time, including Alec Soth, Ari Marcopoulos, Elinor Carucci, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Rineke Dijkstra, Ryan McGinley, Starn Twins, Vanessa Beecroft and Brian Ulrich.
Through lecture, discussion and visual images, students will walk away with a refreshed sense of photographic art in today’s modern world.

Longo was selected by Michael Brenson of New York Magazine to participate in a public symposium critiqued by David Levi-Strauss, where her work was described as being “film noir meets modern nostalgia.” She has exhibited her work extensively in New York and in Humboldt County as well. Colleen has assisted and lectured at the International Center of Photography and the School of Visual Arts. Currently, she is traveling across America photographing her close female friends and her grandmother.
Native American Beadwork, Design & Leatherwork
Among the indigenous nations of North America, decorations of clothing and other tools were abundant. Among the decorations is beadwork. It can turn any simple buckskin bag or clothing into a beautiful work of art.
Students will develop their skills in Native American Indian bead work and design, using traditional and contemporary material. In the advanced class, students will further their proficiency in developing their own designs, and different styles of beading. This course is also for those who would like to work on regalia for ceremonial purposes.

Introduction to the Healing Arts of Emei Qigong
Emei Qigong was developed in China in 1227 A.D. by an enlightened monk. This system was devoted to maintaining excellent health and treating diseases, while striving to attain the goal of enlightenment. Until recently, Emei Qigong was only practiced by monks.
Emei Qigong combines conscious exercising methods allowing one to reach an optimal physical, mental and emotional state.
Through movement, meditation and lecture, you will learn the basic concepts of Qigong and Yin-Yang. Experience Qi in your body and enhance the power of your energy fields. Begin to understand the causes of illness and learn how to prevent illnesses that energy healers often pick up from working on their clients. Learn how to harmonize your heart and other organs with internal massage from healing sounds. Learn six rules for effective healing and discover how to be balanced, content and happy.
The Xiang-Tan City Bureau of Senior Cadres and Health Dept. surveyed the health care spending from 1992-95 of 500 government officials, mostly retirees between 50 and 70 years old, who practiced Qigong on a regular basis. Instead of the increased spending typically seen in this age group, their annual medical costs were decreased by 83% on average, and 232 (46%) reported no medical costs at all (study mentioned in the book, Chinese Medical Qigong).
