Shoes tell a story that address issues of culture, gender, history and sexuality. They can be autobiographical and simultaneously universal.  The style and surface of the shoes augment the dialogue and are a source of communication.

I began working with shoes as a sculptural form in 2002 when I created A True Story, an installation containing 96 shoes made from clay and various materials.  The materials used in that piece were chosen to express a narrative that involved personal history.  My new work also has personal references through the use of style and surface.  For example, chose a 1960’s style high heel as a reference to the time when I was coming of age and discovering what girls did to look feminine.  I chose the size 6 to reference the notion that smaller feet were considered more feminine and sexy.  The various surfaces of this new work reference a particular time in my life that address my personal story, but also the universal story of being a woman.
