As a first year student at HSU, you’re invited to join these and several other amazing, day trips and multi-day adventures.
Explore Your Opportunities
Humboldt State adjoins the Pacific and the Redwood Coast. It’s an adventurer’s paradise. Miles of untrammeled beaches, forests and rivers are within minutes of campus. The Outdoor Adventures program is your opportunity to discover what makes this place a renowned travel destination. We offer one-day and weekend bicycling, camping, canoeing, climbing, hiking, kayaking, rafting and surfing trips. We also offer a five-day wilderness trip (called “HOWL”).
Please Note- These trips are only open to new HSU students. Trips will fill to capacity, so reserve your spot as early as possible. While we keep waiting lists, it is often difficult to fill a last-minute opening.
MAKE NEW FRIENDS
We often receive rave reviews from students who spent a weekend exploring with us, and gained a new appreciation for the environment and their new outdoor skills. We hear just as much positive feedback, though, about the friendships these students built during their weekend in the wild. Starting a new life far from home can be intimidating at first. The Outdoor Adventures program is a great opportunity to meet other first-year students who are taking the higher education plunge. It’s an excellent way to ease into college life.
FROM BEGINNER TO PRO—ALL ARE WELCOME
So, you’ve never rock climbed in your life and you don’t own a pair of those odd-looking, climbing shoes—can you still do the trip? Absolutely. No experience is required for any of these trips. We have patient, experienced guides who will teach you how to have a safe and fun time in all of these adventures. If gear (like surfing wetsuits or hiking backpacks) is required and you don’t already own any, we can rent you the items.
The only skill requirement that we have is this: every student who participates in an aquatic activity must be “water safe”. That means you should be able to swim at least 50 yards, using any stroke, and then be able to tread water for five minutes. Not sure you can do that? Still have questions.
