Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary

The Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary is a wastewater treatment plant for the city of Arcata, and the site of HSU's innovative wastewater aquaculture project. It is also a popular recreation area for birdwatchers, joggers, cyclists and picnickers. With 4 1/2 miles of trails, the Interpretive Center, located at 600 F Street, is open daily 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and offers tours on Saturdays at 2:00 pm. The Redwood Region Audubon Society Chapter offers guided bird watching walks on Saturdays at 8:30 am from the foot of "I" Street. Guests are welcome to visit the Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary at any time. (Phone: 707-826-2359).

First Street Gallery

Through HSU's First Street Gallery, the University seeks to expand its mission in the visual arts by bringing contemporary and historically significant art to our community. Our top exhibition priorities are to exhibit art from outside of our region and to promote the art of our faculty, students and alumni. First Street Gallery is open from noon until 5:00 pm Tuesday through Sunday. The gallery is located in Eureka at 422 First Street between E and F streets. (Phone: 707-443-6363).

Marine Laboratory

The University's Marine Laboratory is located in Trinidad, a 15-minute drive north of the campus. The lab includes a circulating seawater system and contains lecture rooms and labs for classes and student research. In addition to the beautiful view of the ocean, the lab offers a variety of aquariums and a small touch tank (if you've never petted a sea slug, here's your chance). Although the aquariums are currently under construction, the marine laboratory is still well worth the visit. The lab is located at 570 Ewing Street in the town of Trinidad. To get to the laboratory, drive north on Highway 101 and take the "Trinidad" exit. At the stop sign, turn left and drive through town. The Marine Lab will be on your right just as you start down the hill to the harbor. The lab is open for self-guided tours on Saturday from noon until 4:00 pm and Monday through Friday from 9:00 am until 4:30 pm. (Phone: 707-826-3671).
