Campus Takes Lead in Statewide Tsunami-Probability Research

McCrone Recipients Announced

Humboldt State University’s Sponsored Programs Foundation will host the McCrone Promising Faculty Scholars & Graduate Fellowship Awards on Wednesday, Apr. 11, at 4 p.m. in the Great Hall of the College Creek Apartments.

Faculty honorees are Robert Cliver (History), Daniela Mineva (Music) and John Pascal-Berrill (Forestry and Wildland Resources). The fellowship honoree is graduate student Nathan Helm-Burger of Biological Psychology. View full article here.

This year's Institute will be on Wednesday, May 16.  The Institute is a FREE one-day professional development event for faculty, staff, and administrators that will inspire collegiality and continuous collective and individual improvement towards inclusive student success.  The Institute incorporates presentations and conversations from experts, skill-building workshops, active discussion, and structured planning time for integrating new strategies into routine practice.
We are pleased to have Keynote Dr. Claude Steele, Dean, School of Education, Stanford University, former Provost, Columbia University, and author of Whistling Vivaldi: How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do.  The first 20 registrants will receive a free copy of Whistling Vivaldi upon registration.

Undergraduate students working with Biology Professor Mihai Tomescu have discovered several potentially new species, one of which was included in a new family, from collections of plant fossils. View full article here.

For Yurok Tribe, Decade-Long Partnership with Schatz Lab Means Big Upgrades in Energy Efficiency

Since 1999, Schatz Lab has worked with the Yurok Tribe on several grants, studies and energy projects to improve sustainability. Past projects have included a fuel-cell system to provide back up power to a radio repeater station, a feasibility study for hydroelectric and wind energy development and energy audits of over fifty tribal households and multiple government buildings. Most recently, local solar experts, Roger and his Merry Band of Solar Installers, outfitted the Tribe with a solar electric system. View full article here.

Han-Sup Han, Forestry & Wildland Resources

Two research papers were recently published in Western Journal of Applied Forestry. One paper deals with utilization of small-diameter logs generated as a result of fuel reduction thinning treatments. This topic has been an issue for many rural towns in the US West. The title of this paper is “Financial Feasibility of a Log Sort Yard Handling Small-Diameter Logs: A Preliminary Study.” The other paper addresses a spreadsheet-based tool to estimate road construction costs. The software will be loaded onto the department web site. The title of this paper is “ACCEL: Spreadsheet-Based Cost Estimation for Forest Road Construction”.

HSU Students Put Einstein Theory to Test

A two-year, $117,000 National Science Foundation grant will enable Humboldt State University physics students to conduct the most rigorous test worldwide of Einstein’s famous theory of relativity in the campus’s Gravitational Research Laboratory. View full article here.

The College of Natural Resources and Sciences has received a half a million dollar grant to purchase an environmental scanning electron microscope, a cutting-edge tool that will boost faculty-led research in the earth, physical and biological sciences. View full article here.

New Schatz Center Grand Opening

Humboldt State University President Rollin Richmond, Representative Mike Thompson, and Schatz Director Peter Lehman presided at the building dedication and open house of Humboldt State University’s new Schatz Energy Research Center Friday, Sept. 2nd. The new structure sits just west of the Behavioral and Social Sciences Building. The state-of-the-art 6,000 square foot-plus center houses an exterior laboratory, two indoor labs, a machine shop, a conference and library room, and offices for staff and graduate students.View full article here.

2011/2012 Noyce Scholars Announced

The California Coast Noyce Scholars (CCNS) Program is pleased to announce the 2011-2012 recipients of $10,000 Noyce Scholarships: Christopher R. Digrazia, Jeffrey Dutton, and Scott Rentzer, Credential Candidates in Mathematics, and John Wright, Credential Candidate in Physical Science and Mathematics.  The award is to support the educational progress of talented individuals who are committed to earning a teaching credential in Mathematics. By accepting this award, the recipients are also committing to teaching for 2 years in a middle or high school designated as "high needs." Congratulations!

Talent Search Wins $1.9 Million Grant

The Department of Education has awarded Humboldt State University’s Talent Search program a $1.9 million grant to continue its programs that help disadvantaged youths attend college. The five-year grant will support academic, college preparation and financial counseling for middle and high school students from 13 local schools who have the potential to succeed in higher education. Humboldt State Team Scores World Energy First in Bhutan

Faculty Advisor Arne Jacobson, co-director of HSU’s Schatz Energy Research Center and Professor of Environmental Resources Engineering, says, “The students and our partners in Bhutan have done a great job of developing a creative solution to a challenging problem. One key aspect of the solution is a multi-disciplinary approach that combines technical innovation with education and the social dimensions of energy use.” View full article here.

Physics & Astronomy

C.D. Hoyle, Associate Professor of Physics, has received a 2-year award from the National Science Foundation to support student research in the HSU Gravitational Research Laboratory. Experiments in the laboratory are designed to test Einstein’s theory of General Relativity at unprecedented levels as well as search for possible evidence of quantum gravity and dark energy.
