Pledging to Make the World a Better Place—a Tradition That Started at Humboldt State

There's a common misconception about life after college—a belief that ideals and convictions are something you pick up during your university days and then discard the moment you graduate.

Life, some people will tell you, is simply a matter of wearing wrinkle-free polyester and paying your mortgage. Frankly, we think that's aiming a bit low. Our students agree. That's why Humboldt State students created the nation's first graduation pledge in 1987. Every year, our graduating class pledges to make the world a better place in whichever field they choose to work. What's more, thousands of Humboldt State graduates are living out their pledges, proving you can make a buck without tossing out your ideals.

At Humboldt State, we're proud that our students are making a positive difference and we're proud of our pledge. It's just one of the many reasons why the Princeton Review consistently names us one of its "Colleges with a Conscience."
