H1N1 (Swine) Flu Information
Current as of Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 12:59 pm:
The H1N1 (referred to as "novel", and previously "swine") virus is expected to be the predominant flu virus in the United States through 2009-10. The virus is in our local community and expected to be on campus throughout the flu season. This website will be updated with current campus information and advice.
Individuals are encouraged to limit their risk by following the advice of national health groups. In summary:
- Wash your hands frequently or use alcohol-based hand cleaner.
- Cough in your sleeve or cover your cough with a tissue (discard tissue and wash hands).
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Do not share food, drink, or utensils. Germs spread this way.
- Avoid contact with ill persons and practice good hygiene if someone in your home is ill. Facemasks may be worn by those with the flu to limit its spread. Masks are not suggested for healthy people.
- STAY HOME IF YOU ARE ILL. Avoid going out until your fever is gone for 24 hours without medicine to keep the fever down. This is to keep from infecting others and spreading the virus further.
- Protect yourself with seasonal flu vaccine. Check this website for information about the H1N1 vaccine and its availability later this fall. Priority groups for H1N1 vaccine may include people up to age 24, and those with chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma, heart/lung diseases, or a weakened immune system.

HSU Flu Vaccines Update »
October 16, 2009
As of October 15, HSU’s Student Health Center has a small supply of both injection and nasal spray vaccine for seasonal flu. The supply is small because distribution nationwide is sporadic. It is available to students during immunization hours (9 – 11:30 a.m. and 2 – 4 p.m. on non-furlough days), and to staff and faculty on Wednesday mornings from 8-9 a.m., as the inventory allows. Friday University Notices carry word of the clinics.
H1N1 Flu Update »
September 17, 2009
As discussed in a previous all campus memo, the H1N1 (swine) flu is now occurring in the campus community as well as the surrounding community. The several known student cases have been similar in severity to seasonal flu. Because H1N1 is the dominant circulating influenza strain, we are no longer testing to determine the type of flu individuals have contracted.
