Smoothies, Sushi, Beef Wellington… Because Corn Dogs and Doritos for Breakfast Gets Old

Universities aren’t exactly known for their daring and diverse culinary fare. Corn dogs, mac and cheese, some brown wobbly thing that might be old …Well, Humboldt State is destroying the age-old, nasty-dining hall-food paradigm.

There are always plenty of tasty things to eat on campus. The J, for instance, serves up a variety of eats every day – sandwiches, pasta, halibut, beef Wellington, Caribbean mango chicken. In the morning, you can even make your own omelet or pancakes at the J—which, let’s be honest, beats the heck out of scarfing down a cold Pop Tart.

At lunchtime, you can walk across the quad to The Depot—a great place to take advantage of the wireless Internet, shoot some pool, and meet up with friends. The only challenge you’ll face at the Depot is choosing what to eat. There’s the traditional burger, corndog and pizza fare, but you can also get a bagel with cream cheese, tomatoes and chives from Los Bagels, or a burrito, or California Wrap, or fruit smoothie, or salad, or sushi…. Of course, if caffeine is the only thing on your mind, Muddy Waters (our local coffee shop) always serves up a mean espresso—the perfect antidote to a long night of studying.

If you are looking for something a little more formal than the Depot’s coffee house environment, you can head upstairs and get a table at Windows Café. Windows is a restaurant with an impressive menu containing all sorts of sandwiches, grilled fare, pasta and salads.

Of course, there are times when you aren’t exactly looking to meet your daily quotient of fiber and Vitamin A. If you simply need to satisfy a late-night Ben & Jerry’s fix, you’ll also find that The Giant’s Cupboard— a fully-stocked minimart, located right here on campus— is open late for on campus residents.
