7-9 p.m.                 Shadow of Our Sins Lecture: “The Experience of the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima in Poem: The Tears of the Moon"
Fr. Eric Freed
Sponsored by Religious Studies Dept.
Native American Forum, BSS 162

This workshop is inspired by the publication of Eric Freed's new book, The Experience of the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima in Poem. In his book, Professor Freed explores the poetry of a Japanese woman who experienced the atomic bomb blast in Hiroshima, August 6, 1945. His book not only discusses Japanese language and the nature of haiku, but it also provides opportunity to consider how we can avoid ever allowing such horrible events to be perpetrated again.

The title of the workshop is drawn from the text of Professor Freed's book, where he suggests that we all consider the shadows of our own sins in the perpetuation of violence, rather than pointing the finger of blame at others. It is particularly important for us as Americans to consider this idea, since we are the only nation ever to have exploded an atomic device against a civilian population.

Faculty from across the University will come together in this workshop to consider a range of issues involving the Hiroshima bombing in particular, but also potentially other associated topics (such as targeting civilians in other conflicts, Native and African American genocides, devisive and destructive foreign policies, and more). We expect a lively and controversial discussion.

Participants in the workshop include:
Eric Freed (Religious Studies and Newman Center)
William Herbrechtsmeier (Religious Studies -- Coordinator)
Joseph C. Dieme (World Languages and Cultures)
Saeed Mortazavi (Business Administration)
Marlon Sherman (Native American Studies)
Naomi Steinberg (Religious Studies and Temple Beth El)
Paul Sutcliffe (Art)
