Traditions Crossing Cultures”

FH 125

Afro-Cuban folkloric music and dance in Cuba rose up from the intersections of historical and cultural influences of colonialism and slavery. This seminar will discuss these historical intersections, and how they are experienced today in Cuba through everyday traditions, with a focus on folkloric music and dance. Through examples of song, dance, and drumming of Afro-Cuban folkloric culture, as well as some live demonstration and participation, attendees will gain an understanding of how these traditions crossed the boundaries of cultures in the past, and how they continue to do so. The presenters will share how these Afro-Cuban traditions continue to bridge cultures today, drawing from their personal experiences in both the U.S. and Cuba.
