Dr. George Kuh directs the Center for Postsecondary Research and teaches in the Dr. George Kuhgraduate programs in higher education and student affairs administration. His research interests include assessing student and institutional performance to enhance student success and to improve the quality of the undergraduate experience. He founded the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and related surveys for law students, beginning college students, and faculty, along with the NSSE Institute for Effective Educational Practice. Since 1994 he has directed the College Student Experience Questionnaire Research Program. In recent years, Center projects have received funding from the College Board, Lumina Foundation for Education, National Center for Education Statistics, Pew Charitable Trusts, Spencer Foundation, Surdna Foundation, Teagle Foundation, U.S. Department of Education, and the Wabash College Center of Inquiry in the Liberal Arts. Center associates also have done contract work for individual institutions as well as organizations such as the American Council of Learned Societies and Council of Independent Colleges.

Keynote Workshop: What Matters To Student Success

Creating the conditions that foster student success in post-secondary education is more important than ever. Much progress has been made during the past two decades in using active, collaborative, and problem-based learning, learning communities, theme-based residences, service learning, intrusive advising, internships, and other educationally purposeful programs and practices to enrich student learning and promote educational attainment. Despite all this activity, too often these and other effective educational practices are underutilized. In this session we will review what matters to student success and examine key indicators of quality such as student engagement. I will also illustrate the kinds of policies and “high impact” practices that channel student and institutional effort toward educationally purposeful activities and which boost the performance of historically underrepresented students and the less well-prepared. We will additionally look at concrete examples of failures and successes in establishing student success practices and move towards a discussion about what you can do today to move beyond the challenges you face in helping create the conditions for student achievement at Humboldt State University.

Join Dr. Kuh for a follow-up presentation and open discussion abouthigh impact practices and institutional policies that foster student success. This session will allow participants to pose questions about effective practices as well as the challenges they face in promoting student accomplishment at Humboldt including how faculty and staff can collaborate to help students benefit in desired ways from the undergraduate experience.
