In order to extend and enrich campus conversations about meeting our students’ needs, the Institute for Student Success – in collaboration with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion – is offering HSU staff and faculty the opportunity to engage in one of four book circles or reading groups this semester.

Meet one time to discuss a short excerpt from a book. Readings are available online. Complimentary lunch is included.
Do you possess a fixed mindset or a growth mindset? Where do these mindsets come from, are they different in various settings, and how do they impact our study, our work, our students, and our choices? Might helping students to adjust their mindsets affect their success at HSU? Using Carol Dweck’s research (in the fields of personality, social psychology, and developmental psychology) as a springboard, this book circle will tackle these and other questions, with a particular emphasis on applying “mindset” concepts to the many aspects of our work – from our collaborations with colleagues to our day-to-day interactions with students.

Combining research-based practices with learner-centered teaching strategies, this brand new edition of L. Dee Fink’s bestselling classic offers instructors conceptual and procedural tools for course design. Join colleagues to discuss topics including new research on how people learn, applications of active learning in online courses, and the impact of student engagement on student learning. Appropriate for new, seasoned, and aspiring instructors, this book circle will focus on applying Fink’s strategies to adapt or design courses, with the goal of supporting student success by generating powerful learning experiences.

Latino/Latina College Students: Theory, Models, and Practices for Understanding Diversity and Creating Inclusion
As soon as next year, HSU will become a Hispanic Serving Institution, meaning that Latino/a students will comprise at least 25% of our student population. With an aim of building awareness and promoting cultural competence among HSU staff and faculty, this reading explores the experiences of Latino/a students on college campuses. While acknowledging the broad diversity within the Latino/a population, the chapter offers insights into the critical cultural role of family and generational status, addresses campus climate issues, and describes approaches and programs that have proven successful in supporting Latino/a students.

The autobiographical essays in This Fine Place So Far From Home offer insight into the experiences of people from the working class – often the first members of their families to attend college – who have labored to find their place in higher education. The authors share the ways in which they discovered, adapted to – and sometimes resisted – the hidden cultural norms of the academy. Whether it resonates with your own personal history, or provides new perspectives on the experiences our students (or colleagues) might face in finding a place at HSU, staff and faculty alike will find valuable takeaways in this reading and discussion.

In recognition of the impact these topics have on the capacity of HSU staff and faculty to best serve our students, complimentary lunch will be offered to all who participate in a reading group, and a copy of the book and a $100 honorarium will be offered to all who participate fully in a book circle. Given that our budget for this popular project is limited, we also offer participants the option to forego this honorarium in order to allow more colleagues the opportunity to participate.
