The Bridge Program for Advanced Students
About
The Bridge Program is a way for IELI students to get experience in a university-level academic class before they become full-time university students. Students can apply up to 24 undergraduate credits or 9-12 graduate level credits earned in the Bridge Program to their degree.
Bridge students attend 19 hours a week of ESL instruction and attend 1 HSU course (up to 4 semester credits). Below is an example of a Bridge student’s weekly schedule.

Bridge Program Requirements
Bridge students must meet the following requirements at all times.
- Enrollment for the Bridge Program occurs in August and January. Plan your application and arrivals accordingly.
- Attend Bridge Program Orientation. This takes place during the week before classes begin. Therefore, you must be on campus before the first day of classes.
- Continue to attend the IELI courses regularly. Attendance policies still apply to Bridge students.
- Maintain a B average in IELI classes.
- Make satisfactory progress in HSU classes (ie: have at least a grade of C or Credit in each class).
- Maintain full-time student status at all times.
Placement in the Bridge Program is not automatic, nor is it irrevocable; students must continue to meet requirements to be able to continue as a Bridge student.
If a student does not attend the orientation, is not attending their university classes or their IELI classes, not maintaining required grade averages, or has withdrawn from a university course without first meeting with their adviser, they will be removed from the Bridge Program. No refunds are given for students who are removed due to not meeting requirements.
Costs
One semester of Bridge Program tuition is $5,500. This includes two sessions of IELI tuition as well as the cost of a 3 unit academic course. Additional costs, such as student fees, will be applied at the time of enrollment. For more information please see the Costs page.
