Karol Andersson, Associate Director
Karol became the Associate Director in 2014 after teaching in the IELI since 2009. In addition to ESL instruction and linguistics, her background includes educational intervention, business management, and marketing. She is a Humboldt State University alumna with an M.A. in English with a focus on discourse analysis and the teaching of writing. Karol finds tremendous joy in working with students from around the world and helping them to achieve their educational goals.
Nicola Moloney, IELI International Student Services and Admissions Coordinator
Nicola grew up in London and moved to a tiny village in the mountains of California called Willow Creek. As a 19 year old immigrant from the UK to America, Nicola discovered a passion for inter-cultural issues and international communication. She learned the effects of culture shock and the skills needed to learn and grow in a foreign country. She is an alumni of HSU with a degree in International Studies. Nicola has worked as a Coordinator for the International English Language Institute since 2003.
Calvin Li, IELI Housing & Events Coordinator
Calvin received his B.A. in International Studies with a focus in Chinese Studies with a minor in Spanish at Humboldt State University in May 2012. During his time at HSU, he spent a year abroad in Xi’an, China and a summer in Ecuador. While attending HSU, he worked at the MultiCultural Center for 4 years, and served as the International Student Outreach Coordinator during his senior year and helped organize events for International Students. After graduating from HSU, he went to graduate school at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana and received his M.A. in Chinese Studies in August 2013, and spent another summer in China. After graduating from Valparaiso University, he decided to move back to Humboldt County to work at the International English Language Institute. Calvin is responsible for helping students find off-campus housing and organizing activities for students at the IELI. During his spare time, Calvin enjoys going to the gym, playing and watching sports, cooking, travelling, and playing video games.
Rebecca Petrow, IELI Office Coordinator
Rebecca Petrow (“Becky”) received her B.A. from Humboldt State University in International Studies and French. She also participated in Study Abroad as a student in the summer of 2011. She has been working in the Center for International Programs since August of 2012, first as a Student Assistant, then as a Study Abroad Adviser and IELI Activities Coordinator. Currently, Becky is the Office Coordinator at the International English Language Institute. Aside from her various daily responsibilities in the office, Becky organizes and runs new student orientations, the Student Ambassadors Program, and she is currently training for Immigration Advising. Outside of the office, Becky enjoys arts and crafts and experiencing both the natural and cultural offerings of Humboldt County, California.
Tyler Bradbury, Core Teacher
Tyler has been teaching ESL both in the USA and abroad since 2001. She is a graduate of Grinnell College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and received her Masters in Education, TESOL from the State University of New York, Buffalo in 2006. She has lived and taught in the People's Republic of China and in several places in France. She speaks French fluently. Exploring new countries and becoming familiar with new cultures is what drew Tyler to ESL; she loves learning about her students' cultures and experiences. Her door is always open for students experiencing academic or cultural adjustment problems!
Richard Pelberg, IELI Instructor
Richard’s experience at HSU began in the spring of 2012. Prior to moving to the redwoods, Richard taught at a vocational English school in Philadelphia, as well as with a Learn English Online program. He also has international teaching experience, having spent a term teaching in Costa Rica. Richard is TEFL certified, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from Arizona State University. Outside of the classroom, Richard spends his free time playing disc golf, birding, and enjoying nature.
Shelley Stewart, IELI Instructor
Shelley Stewart received a Bachelor of the Arts degree in English, and she didn't stop there - she continued her education and earned her Master of the Arts degree in Literature. Shelley has been teaching in Humboldt County since 1993.
Amber Thompson, IELI Instructor
An alumna of Humboldt State University, Amber graduated in 1999 with a degree in Elementary Education and minors in Speech Communication and TESOL. She received a Multiple Subjects teaching credential in 2000 from HSU. Amber taught for 5 years at an elementary school in Sacramento. She later became an ESL teacher at the Eureka Adult School. Since May of 2012, Amber has taught ESL at the International English Language Institute. When she isn’t teaching English at HSU, Amber enjoys running, hiking, and traveling.
Barbara Reisman, IELI Instructor
Before coming to the IELI in fall of 2013, Barbara gained more than 25 years of teaching experience. She has taught at both elementary and adult levels in English as a Second Language. She has also taught aspiring teachers to be ESL certified. Her experiences teaching abroad include Azerbaijan, Japan, China, Ecuador and Mexico. Her own education includes a Master of Arts in Adult Education with an emphasis in English as a Second Language as well as a Bachelor of Arts in English. She is also certified to teach in primary and secondary schools in California. When she’s not teaching, Barbara enjoys birding and volunteering with environmental groups.
Karen Davy, IELI Instructor
Karen Davy received her Master of Science in Education from Queens College of the City University of New York. She received her TESOL Certification from the TEFL Academy. In addition to teaching at the IELI, Karen is also a member of the string faculty in the Humboldt State University Music Department.
Amanda Alexander, IELI Instructor
Amanda began teaching with the IELI in March of 2014. Previously, she taught Composition with the English Department at Humboldt State University. In 2010, she received her B.A. in English Education, as well as a B.A. in German from HSU. In 2013, she received her M.A. in English with a dual emphasis on the Teaching of Writing and Literature, also from HSU. Amanda's research interests include: language rights and multilingual students in the classroom, 19th Century Gothic Literature, and literature in translation. In her free time, she loves reading and spending time with her husband, dog, and cat.
Stacey DeMartini, IELI Instructor
Stacey graduated from HSU with a degree in Spanish in 2013, after which she lived in Mexico where she discovered the joys of teaching English as a Foreign Language. Stacey received her certification to teach English from International TEFL and TESL Training. Outside of HSU, Stacey enjoys traveling, filmmaking, and exploring the natural world.
Heal McKnight, IELI Instructor
Heal began teaching English at the IELI in March of 2014. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the Illinois Wesleyan University, and continued on to earn an Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Nonfiction Writing from the University of Iowa. Outside of work, Heal is an avid cyclist, and also enjoys good food which she grows and prepares at home. Heal is also a parent of a young child and they spend a lot of time playing together.
