Google :: Caveats for Users

Gmail Privacy Issues

It appears that Google's privacy policies as they apply to the handling of mail content in Google Apps for Education may have changed since HSU signed up with Google in 2010. We are keeping an eye on ongoing court cases around this issue and will communicate further to campus if the outcome of these cases or any further information from Google warrants such action. In the meantime, you can read more about the issue at the following links:

Google Apps :: Avoiding Accessibility Pitfalls

Accessibility and Google Apps became an issue recently when complaints of discrimination were filed against New York University and Northwestern University. The complaints charged that the schools’ Google Apps implementations were not fully compatible with text-to-speech conversion technology, thus discriminating against students who are blind.

Google Apps :: Sites :: Adjusting Site Visibility

By default, your site will only be available to everybody at Humboldt State University. You'll likely want to change this, for not only does this limit your audience to the HSU community, it also means that the viewers of your site must have taken the ATI training.

On the Create new site in humboldt.edu page, click More Options, and select your desired site visibility. In the example below, we've selected Everybody at Humboldt State University and Also let anyone in the world view this site (make it public).

Google Apps :: Blogger

Overview of Blogger

Blogger is a blog-publishing service run by Google that allows creation of weblogs with time-stamped entries. If you have used WYSIWYG page authoring tools such as Dreamweaver in the past, you will be comfortable with using Google Sites. Unlike Google Sites, Alternative Text (ALT tags) will have to be generated manually.

Overview of Google Sites

Google Sites offers single-click page creation, customizable look and feel, dozens of pre-built templates, and settings for accessing and sharing information. If you have used WYSIWYG page authoring tools such as Dreamweaver in the past, you will be comfortable with using Google Sites.

Be aware that the URLs generated by Google Sites automatically use whatever name you choose for the site and are in the following form:
