Here are some tips and tricks for getting the most out of clicker use in the classroom:

Make time for clickers during class

  • Don't treat them as add-ons to a standard lecture
  • Incorporate clicker use into the design of the class from the ground up

Don't set your expectations too high - especially in the beginning

  • Remember that clickers are a learning experience for you and your students
  • You can let your expectations increase as everyone becomes more comfortable with the technology

Understand your students' perspective

  • Give them the time and feedback they need to acquire, register, set up, and use their new devices successfully

Network with experienced clicker faculty

  • Whether inside or outside your department, exchanging ideas with those familiar with clicker use will help you get your own ideas together and implemented

Don't assign points for the first week or two

  • Give yourself and your students time to get used to the new technology
  • Allow time for testing the clickers in a "live" classroom situation
  • Issue (and enforce) a deadline for students to register their clickers so everyone can start using them at the same time

Allow yourself to get creative

  • Learning to use clickers is a mutli-step process - once you have the basics down, start expanding your creativity
  • Know your limits - but remember to have fun as well!

Ask questions

  • The HSU Clicker Support Team is available to answer your questions at X4778. Or by dropping in to Moodle Support in Lib 315 (M-F, 8 to 5). You may email clicker.help@humboldt.edu
  • Talk with one of the Extended Education instructional design and technology specialists:

Riley Quarles, MA Ed, (707) 826-3644, Riley.Quarles@humboldt.edu

Kim Vincent Layton, MBA, (707) 826-6112, Kim.Vincent-Layton@humboldt.edu

Be prepared!

  • Murphy's Law applies in spades when it comes to technology, so always be sure to have a back-up plan for when something goes wrong
