Wireless Security Changes Effective 11-23-09
Wireless registration is going to get a little easier for Windows users. Instead of waiting for Microsoft to finish installing all of its patches, Windows users will need to enable Automatic Updates to connect to the wireless network. If your Windows system isn't configured to run Automatic Updates, the CSA will make that setting for you on your computer.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)
As part of the border firewall closure project, HSU has deployed a Virtual Private Network (VPN) server, which will allow staff and faculty who are already using Remote Desktop or VNC to connect to their office computers to make that connection via an easy and secure web interface. For more information, see www.humboldt.edu/~security/vpn.
Help Desk and TNS Change in Open Hours
Beginning Monday, September 21, 2009, the ITS Help Desk and the TNS Operations call center will be closing to telephone and walk-in traffic at 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The staff in these areas will be using this time for uninterrupted focus on completing projects and resolving support issues. We apologize if this creates any inconvenience.
ITS Furlough Information
Due to the severe state budget cuts to the California State University system, most of our employees are taking 24 unpaid furlough days this year. The majority of ITS support services will be unavailable on campus furlough days, except for those that are in direct support of instruction.

Secure SMTP Transition
Beginning in Fall, 2009, all email clients (including those on-campus) must be configured to use Secure SMTP (the protocol that allows you to transmit email) over port 465 (the standard SSL port) with authentication (a user name and password). This migration continues the Secure Communication project that was started in 2005.

HSU Policy About Student Email
Resulting from a proposal in the Academic Senate and approval by the President, starting June 1, 2009, your Humboldt State University email account is an official form of communication between you and the university. You are responsible for checking your HSU email account for official communications. Although you may elect to redirect messages sent to your official HSU email address to another address, you do so at your own risk. Having an email lost as a result of re-direction does not absolve you from responsibilities associated with communication sent to your official university email address. The university is not responsible for the handling of email by outside vendors or unofficial servers.

Password Expiration
HSU has started to implement expiration of passwords at regular intervals.
The first systems to receive this security feature are PeopleSoft Finance
and PeopleSoft HR. Emails will be sent reminding you to change your password
before it expires.

Online File Storage
Network Folder space, that can be used for storing
HSU related files so they are accessible from any computer connected to the internet, is available.
