Secure Wireless :: How to Connect

Before You Start

To connect to the HSUWireless-Secure network, your computer must support the WPA2 security standard, and you must have installed the latest Apple updates.

To update your OS X installation, go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Software Update

You will need an Administrator ID and password to update the OS.

Configuring Your Computer

Step 1: Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the status menu bar.

Step 2: Ensure Wi-Fi is turned ON.

Ensure Airport is turned ON.

Step 3: Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the status menu bar again and connect the Wi-Fi to HSUWireless if the connection has not already been made automatically.

Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the status menu bar again. -Connect to HSUWireless (if not already connected).

Step 4: Open your browser.

If you have never used wireless before at HSU, there a couple more one-time steps you may need to take when you first attempt to connect to the wireless network:

When you open your browser, you my be promoted to authenticate your identity [1] using your HSU User Name [2] and Password.
You may also be prompted to install the PolicyKey [3] software. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the software.

Step 5: Browse to http://www.humboldt.edu/its/secure-wireless-connect-osx-107 [4] if it is not displayed automatically

Step 6: Right-click on HSU-User-Owned-Installer [5] select Save Target As or Save Link As.

Right Click on the following link and select Save Target As or Save Link As HSU-User-Owned-Installer (To right-click in OSX, depress the shift and control keys simulatenously while clicking on the link):

Step 7: Save the file to your desktop, making sure to keep the default filename signed-user-owned.mobileconfig. Click the Save button.

Step 8: Locate the file signed-user-owned.mobileconfig you just downloaded to your desktop and open it by double-clicking on it.

Step 9: A Profiles window will appear.

Ensure the message Install HSU OSX 10.7 - 10.8 Secure Wireless Profile - PERSONAL? is displayed.

Click the Show Profile button

Ensure the message Install HSU OSX 10.7 - 10.8 Secure Wireless Profile - PERSONAL? is displayed. Then Click the Show Profile button

Step 10: Ensure that the profile is authentic by checking that it:

is signed by wireless.humboldt.edu
is marked as Verified

Click Continue.

IMPORTANT: Do not click continue if the profile is not signed by wireless.humboldt.edu AND marked as Verified.

Inspect the profile for authenticity. - Ensure that the certificate is signed by wireless.humboldt.edu, and is marked as Verified Do not click continue if the profile is not signed by wireless.humboldt.edu AND marked as Verified. - Then click Continue.

Step 11: Enter your HSU User Name and Password and click Install to continue.

You will now be asked to enter your HSU User Name and Password. -Click Install to continue

Step 12: Enter the Administrative User Name and Password for your computer and click OK.

You will be prompted to enter your local machines Administrative User Name and Password. - Then Click OK.

Step 13: Close the Profiles window.

Step 14: Your computer should now recognize the HSUWireless-Secure network:

Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the Status Menu Bar.
Click on HSUWireless-Secure

Your computer may initially take up to 20 seconds to connect.

Step 15: Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the Status Menu Bar again and then click Open Network Preferences.

Step 16: Confirm you're connected and click the Advanced button.

Step 17: On the Wi-Fi tab, locate the Preferred Networks box and then

Drag the HSUWireless-Secure network so that it is above the HSUWireless network. This will ensure you always connect securely.

Click OK.

Step 18: Enter your computer's Administrative User Name and Password when prompted, then click OK.

Step 19: Click Apply to save your settings.

Step 20: Close the Network Settings window.

Note: If you have never connected to any HSU network, or you've been away for more than 30 days, you will need to accept the HSU Appropriate Use Policy [6]by signing the document digitally using your HSU User Name and Password.
