Before You Start

Make sure the machine is as up to date as it can be and that you have administrative access to it.

Configuring theComputer

Step 1: Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the status menu bar.

Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the status menu bar.

Step 2: Ensure Wi-Fi is turned ON.

Ensure Airport is turned ON.

Step 3: Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the status menu bar again and connect the Wi-Fi to HSUWireless if the connection has not already been made automatically.

Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the status menu bar again. -Connect to HSUWireless (if not already connected).

Step 4: Open a browser

If this machine has never connected to wireless at HSU before, there a couple more one-time steps you may need to take when you first attempt to connect the machine to the wireless network:

  • When you open the browser, you may be asked to authenticate your identity using your HSU User Name and Password.
  • You may also be prompted to install the PolicyKey software. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the software.
Step 5: Browse to https://www.humboldt.edu/its/secure-wireless-connect-osx-107-hsu-owned if this screen is not displayed already. To access this page, you must first sign in at https://www.humboldt.edu/its/user

Step 6:  Download the profile configuration file from https://www.humboldt.edu/its/sites/its/files/docs/certs/signed-hsu-owned.mobileconfig by right clicking and selecting Save Link As

Right Click on the following link and select Save Target As or Save Link As HSU-User-Owned-Installer (To right-click in OSX, depress the shift and control keys simulatenously while clicking on the link):

Step 7: Save the file to the desktop, making sure to keep the default filename signed-hsu-owned.mobileconfig, and click Save.

Step 8: Locate the file signed-hsu-owned.mobileconfig you just downloaded to the desktop and right click on the file, then select Open With and then System Preferences.

 

Step 9: A Profiles window will appear. Ensure the message Install HSU OSX 10.7 Secure Wireless Profile - HSU OWNED? is displayed, and click Show Profile.

Step 10: Ensure that the profile is authentic by checking that it:

  • is signed by wireless.humboldt.edu
  • is marked as Verified

Click Install

IMPORTANT: Do not install if the profile is not signed by wireless.humboldt.edu AND marked Verified.

Step 11: Enter the Administrative User Name and Password for your computer and click OK.

You will be prompted to enter your local machines Administrative User Name and Password. - Then Click OK.

Step 12: Close the Profiles window.
 
  Close the Profiles window.

 

Step 13: The computer should now recognize the HSUWireless-Secure network:

  • Click on the Wi-Fi  icon in the Status Menu Bar.
  • Click on HSUWireless-Secure

The computer may initially take up to 20 seconds to connect.

 

Step 14: Click on the Wi-Fi icon in the Status Menu Bar again and then click Open Network Preferences.

 

Step 15: Confirm you're connected and click Advanced.

 

Step 16: On the Wi-Fi tab,go to the Preferred Networks box and drag the HSUWireless-Secure network so it is above the HSUWireless network. This will ensure the user always connects securely.

Click OK.

 

Step 17: Enter the computer's Administrative User Name and Password when prompted, then click OK.

 

Step 18: Click Apply to save these settings.

 

 

Step 19: Log out of the admin account on this machine.

Log out of the admin account on this machine and you will be prompted to log onto the network AND the machine itself.

User Education

To complete the process, you'll need to discuss with the user how they generally use the laptop, so that you can advise them on which login process to use, depending on where and how they are connecting with the machine.

Here are the two usage types:

  • Instance A:
    • Used to connect the machine to the HSUWireless-Secure network and to login to managed (by Active Directory) accounts.
  • Instance B:
    • Used to login to managed (by Active Directory) accounts when using another network (such as the wired network, or another wireless network) or when no network connection is available. In this case, the WIFI setting should be changed to None.

       
 

Note: If this device has never connected to any HSU network, or the user has been away for more than 30 days, they will need to accept the CSU Responsible Use Policy by signing the document digitally using their HSU User Name and Password.
