Humboldt State University
Loss of Staff Member Gayleen Smith

Dear Friends,

It is with sadness that I share with you news of the death of Gayleen Smith, who worked in the Department of Forestry and Wildland Resources. She died April 24 after a brave fight with cancer.

This is a difficult loss for many members of our University community, particularly Gayleen's family, friends and colleagues. On behalf of the campus, I would like to express our deepest condolences.

Gayleen worked at Humboldt State since 2000, first in Plant Operations. She is remembered fondly by those on campus who knew her best as a warm, cheerful person with a great sense of humor, someone who lived life to the fullest. Her welcoming nature helped her connect with faculty, staff and students alike. In the Department of Forestry and Wildland Resources, many considered her their "Forestry Mom." More than 75 students gathered in April to have their photograph taken for a card that was then delivered to Gayleen. According to her colleagues, "She brought joy to all who knew her and she will be greatly missed."

The campus flag will be lowered to half-mast on Friday, May 3, in Gayleen's honor and her family will hold a memorial service on June 22.

Once again, let me offer our campus community's deepest condolences to all those who were close to Gayleen. Our thoughts are with you, and we are here for you. Anyone in need of additional support during this time are urged to consider contacting the Counseling Center on campus at 826-3236.

Sincerely,
