Teaching that Emphasizes Mathematical
Practices for K-8 Teachers (TEMPT)

Brief Description of the Program

Over 40 states have adopted the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS). This workshop will give participants an opportunity to explore the changes represented by the CCSS, particularly related to the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP), and to consider how best to prepare prospective and current K-8 teachers for these changes. The program will begin on-line with participants reflecting on the CCSS from their own state, and discussing their current involvement in coursework or professional development for K-8 teachers, relative to the SMP of the CCSS. The intensive portion of the program will be a face-to-face meeting the third week of June, 2012 on the beautiful campus of Humboldt State University in the heart of the redwoods. Participants will engage in hands-on, collaborative learning experiences in math that involve the SMP during mornings, and group activities to develop and analyze related experiences for prospective and current K-8 teachers in the afternoons. There will also be evening activities.

Following the week-long meeting, participants will document specific implementation of the SMP in their work with pre-service or in-service K-8 teachers. The workshop is designed for math and math education faculty members who have some experience working with pre-service or inservice K-8 teachers. Ideally, all participants will be from states that have adopted the CCSS. We especially encourage teams of 2 from the same institution.
