The award-winning Jazz Orchestra from Humboldt State University is as comfortable playing the best of contemporary big band jazz from composers and arrangers like Maria Schneider, Charles Mingus, Jim McNeely and Toshiko Akiyoshi as they are playing the classic Swing Era music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller.

The Jazz Orchestra has regularly received superior ratings at collegiate jazz festivals, most recently at the 2000 Reno International Jazz Festival. In the spring of 1997, the P.M. Band celebrated its twentieth anniversary in style, being named the Outstanding 4-Year Student Big Band at the Pacific Coast Collegiate Jazz Festival, held at the University of California, Berkeley.

The Jazz Orchestra has played with or opened for such noted jazz artists as Ingrid Jensen, Louie Bellson, Richie Cole, Herbie Mann, Shorty Rogers and Bud Shank, the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big Band, Poncho Sanchez and Mongo Santamaria, and Marcus Roberts.

The Jazz Orchestra is led by HSU music professor Dan Aldag.
