Fort Humboldt State Historic Park: 2 p.m. Fort Humboldt Visitor Center
Visit Fort Humboldt State Historic Park and tour the Fort’s parade grounds and buildings, site of one of the most remote military outposts in California in the 1850s and 60s. Learn about an emerging standards-based, cultural history program focused on the themes of military, Native Americans, settlers and loggers and their conflicting cultures. Tour will take approximately 2 hours. Good walking shoes and rain gear recommended. Ft. Humboldt website

Falk: From Company Town to Forest Ground: 2 p.m. at Headwater’s Trailhead
Join a BLM interpretive ranger who will lead a 2-mile round trip hike to the historic mill town of Falk. The mill was in operation from 1884-1937 and was a ghost town for forty years. In 1999, Headwaters Forest Reserve was purchased by the federal government and tours of Falk began. Although most of the buildings are gone, an historic barn is being rehabilitated into an interpretive center. The tour is approximately 2 hours long. Good walking shoes and rain gear recommended. Humboldt Redwoods State Park Founder’s Grove: 2 p.m. at Humboldt Redwoods State Park Visitor Center
Take a 2-hour walk through historic Founder’s Grove, where the preservation of California’s ancient redwood forests began. The largest contiguous old-growth forests in the world are found here — the reason that the California State Parks system was established in the 1920s. Learn about the history of the preservation movement, as well as state parks’ most recent work to rehabilitate logged-over land and re-establish the forest ecosystem. Good walking shoes and rain gear recommended. Humboldt Redwoods State Park website

Humboldt Bay Kayaking: 2 p.m. at Aquatic Center
During this trip we will follow in the footsteps of explorers past. Join us for a guided eco-tour of Humboldt Bay. We will explore the tidal marshes and bird sanctuaries and paddle past native encampments that are thousands of years old. Our guides are trained naturalists and professional kayakers guaranteeing you a safe, comfortable, and fact-filled tour. This tour leaves right from the Aquatic Center and usually runs for 2 hours. Cost is $25 (payment due at time of field trip). All kayaks, kayak equipment, wetsuits and rain gear provided (this is a rain or shine trip).
