THE INSIDE SCOOP: Fall 2014

From Sheila Rocker Heppe, OLLI Director

Let’s start with gratitude! Thank you!

During the past year, OLLI at HSU embarked upon a membership-wide fundraising campaign.

As you can observe on the facing page, our Friends of OLLI list has quadrupled, and I am pleased to report we surpassed our $20,000 goal before the June 30 deadline. With nearly 200 members contributing, the community demonstrated support for lifelong learning and OLLI at HSU.

This generosity makes it possible to continue the OLLI mission of promoting lifelong learning in very specific ways. We are able to:

  • enhance our classrooms to provide hearing assistance and upgrade computer equipment,
  • offer course scholarships for members, and
  • keep our class fees low.

In partnership with Dr. Julie Kelly from North Coast Audiology and Dr. Joanna Marcus from Humboldt Audiology, OLLI at HSU is installing hearing loop systems in classroom spaces where OLLI at HSU members gather to learn. These systems help enhance sound through hearing aids equipped with telecoils (T-coils). As a demonstration of their dedication to creating a hearing community, Dr. Kelly and Dr. Marcus are working with OLLI to help purchase the systems and provide training to best utilize this new technology.

OLLI at HSU received a grant from the Redwood Music Festival this year to purchase assisted hearing devices so anyone can access the hearing loop systems to enhance learning. OLLI members will also notice new projectors and computers in the classrooms at HBAC.

Our membership fees and course fees will remain the same in 2014-2015. As always, full and partial scholarships are available to OLLI members who require financial assistance. More information and the scholarship form are available on the OLLI FAQ page.

Last Spring, Dr. Alistair McCrone, the fifth President of Humboldt State University, gave OLLI at HSU a generous donation to support scholarships and course offerings in the field of Geology. Please see the fall course page for more information about President McCrone and some of the science classes offered this fall.

Speaking of classes, the fall line-up offers many new active learning experiences. Tracey Barnes Priestley is inviting OLLI members to be a part of her show this fall; see all the details. We are offering on-site tours of four historical inns of the North Coast and many opportunities to explore outdoors with OLLI. This fall, OLLI members can even learn to tango!

Please plan to attend the Fall Open House on August 16 from 1-3 p.m. to explore all the courses OLLI has to offer. And, mark your calendars – our second full membership meeting will be held at HBAC on Wednesday, August 27 at noon.

Finally, learn more about the special OLLI discount for a selected variety of Center Arts shows!

It is an exciting time to be a part of the OLLI at HSU community!

With gratitude,

Sheila
