WHEREAS,  The fundamental mission of educators at HSU historically has been and continues to be the development in students of knowledge and skills that will serve them as individuals and professionals in furthering their careers and lifetime goals; and

WHEREAS,  Pedagogy across disciplines currently is structured toward outcomes that serve the student in achieving individual, professional and lifetime goals; and significant assessment activities are presently in place that confirm the effectiveness of HSU programs in facilitating these outcomes; and
 
WHEREAS,  A more formal means of identifying, gathering, evaluating and reporting materials related to outcomes and assessment activities would facilitate a clearer understanding of educational effectiveness, as well as suggesting directions for future exploration and growth; and
 
WHEREAS,  Faculty participation in developing and reporting strategies regarding academic outcomes and assessment activities represents a valuable investment in and contribution to the academic enterprise and should be acknowledged as such; and
 
WHEREAS,  The processes involved in outcomes and assessment review and evaluation are intended to promote only those positive activities that nurture and enhance academic excellence; and
 
WHEREAS,    Within current budgetary constraints, our commitment to educational quality does not allow any further redirection of resources for additional assessment, evaluation of data and reporting of the results; therefore, be it
 
RESOLVED:   That the Academic Senate of Humboldt State University affirm its support of outcomes and assessment activities as potentially providing valuable information regarding the effectiveness of academic programs and aiding in the enhancement of teaching and learning; and be it further
 
RESOLVED:   That the Academic Senate of Humboldt State University recommend that a Joint Assessment Committee be formed (consisting of representatives from the Academic Senate, the University Curriculum Committee and Associated Students) to assist in coordinating campus-wide outcomes and assessment strategies; and be it further
 
RESOLVED:   That the Academic Senate of Humboldt State University recommend that the Joint Assessment Committee, working with the Faculty Development Office, conduct a campus survey to determine what department outcomes and assessment strategies and activities currently are in place; and be it further
 
RESOLVED:   That the Academic Senate of Humboldt State University recommend that the Joint Assessment Committee report on a regular basis, and no less than once per year, to the Academic Senate and the University Curriculum Committee; and be it further
 
RESOLVED:   That the Academic Senate of Humboldt State University recommend that representatives from the Academic Senate and the University Curriculum Committee meet to more specifically describe the mission of the Joint Assessment Committee, its reporting responsibilities, and to define its membership; and be it further
 
RESOLVED:   That the Academic Senate of Humboldt State University recommend that faculty participating in outcomes and assessment activities be encouraged to document these contributions for their own professional use; and be it further
 
RESOLVED:   That the Academic Senate of Humboldt State University recommend that data derived from outcomes and assessment activities be applied toward aiding in the enhancement of teaching and learning; and be it further
 
RESOLVED:   That the Academic Senate of Humboldt State University recommend that adequate CSU funds be provided to compensate those individuals who make significant contributions to the outcomes and assessment processes; and to fund the gathering, compilation, evaluation and dissemination of outcomes and assessment materials and results.
