WHEREAS, The recent decision on the part of the Vice President for Academic Affairs to terminate the search for a Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences due to alleged violations of confidentiality came without warning to the search committee; and
WHEREAS, Such an action violates accepted standards of consultation and collegiality as established by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), the CSU Statement on Collegiality, and the traditions of Humboldt State University; and
WHEREAS, Communication with the search committee concerning the alleged violations of confidentiality would not have compromised the search process; and
WHEREAS, Actions taken with regard to this search have undermined faculty and student confidence in the academic administration of the University; and
WHEREAS, Clarification of search processes, policies and expectations is critical to inform the faculty, students, and staff who willingly and conscientiously serve on search committees; and
WHEREAS, The Humboldt State University academic community is involved in and faces in the future a number of searches for both faculty and administrative positions; and
WHEREAS, An atmosphere of shared governance and collegial respect is critical to the successful completion of these searches and to the daily operations of the University; and
WHEREAS, The actions of the current Vice President for Academic Affairs, as well as actions by other administrators, are part of a long term pattern of disregard of shared governance and collegiality including, but not limited to, the firing of academic deans and serious intrusions into the curricular process (see senate resolution #09-97/98-EX); therefore, be it
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of Humboldt State University request that the Chair of the Academic Senate transmit a letter to the American Association of University Professors denouncing the continued failure of Humboldt State University administration to follow accepted standards of consultation as most recently demonstrated in the search for a Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; and be it further
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of Humboldt State University request that the Chair of the Academic Senate write to the President of the University and the University Executive Committee expressing the deep concern of the Senate over continued violations of collegiality and the expectation of the Senate that respect for faculty and student rights under shared governance will be demonstrated in future decisions related to the academic administration of the University such that the confidence of the faculty and students in that administration can be restored.
