The HSU “Network” consists of cables and wireless media, equipment such as switches, routers, firewalls and computers, signals, communication protocols, and network based services used to transmit data. The campus network is a resource used by the entire campus community. To ensure that this resource is properly maintained and available for its intended use, all network-attached devices must conform to a minimum, uniform standard.
The purpose of this policy is to safeguard and ensure the reliability and availability of the Humboldt State University network to support the mission of the University.
No network communications device, including but not limited to, hubs, mini-hubs, port splitters, bridges, routers, switches or wireless access points, may be connected to the campus network without prior authorization from Information Technology Services (ITS). Any unauthorized networked device or any networked device that is negatively impacting the management or the quality of service of the campus network may be disconnected by ITS.
Network devices, such as hubs, mini-hubs, port splitters, bridges, routers, switches, or wireless access points, may be approved for temporary connection to the campus network under the following conditions:
The Chief Information Officer (CIO), in concert with the Central IT Systems and Services, is responsible for ensuring that the minimum university standard for networking equipment conforms to prevailing technology, industry best practices, and CSU Guidelines, and for ensuring that these standards meet the needs of the campus.
Campus system administrators for desktops or servers are responsible for keeping ITS informed of their network connection needs. System administrators are responsible for configuring, operating and maintaining all approved network devices not acquired by ITS, including any attached devices. All such devices must be secured with appropriate passwords and configured to minimize security and performance risks to the campus network.
ITS will assist campus entities with their requests for additional connectivity and will ensure the proper functioning of ports provided.
