Ninth Annual Victor T. Schaub Memorial Lecture on Local Politics

Join HSU’s Department of Politics on Wednesday, February 27, for the ninth annual Victor T. Schaub Memorial Lecture on Local Politics: “Trails, Rails and (T)Rails: The Future of the Humboldt Bay Rail Corridor.”

This year’s event will be a panel discussion on the compromise reached late last year between local trail and rail advocates. The Humboldt Bay Rail Corridor has been the focus of a struggle between community groups who wish to preserve and improve it for restored rail service and those who feel the best use for the unused section of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad is to convert it into a bike and pedestrian trail between the two major population centers of Humboldt County. Learn what’s involved in the compromise solution and plans for its implementation.
Panelists will be Bill Kier, North Coast Rail Authority board member; Judy Hodgson, editor of the North Coast Journal and member of the Humboldt Trails Council; Dan Hauser, former executive director of the North Coast Railroad Authority and general manager of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad; and Sam Pennisi, former Arcata mayor and rail advocate. The panel will be moderated by Cliff Berkowitz, operations manager at KHUM.
Victor Schaub was an Arcata civil attorney and professional mediator. He was elected to the City Council in 1988 and served two terms, until 1996. He served as mayor from 1990-95. Schaub died in 2004 at the age of 60. The Victor Schaub Memorial Lecture series was established in his honor.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Great Hall above the College Creek Marketplace.
