Dr. Hu earned a medical doctoral degree from the Shanghai Medical University in China in 1977. After completing his residency in Shanghai First People’s Hospital in 1978, Dr. Hu had taught medicine in Shanghai Medical University for 9 years. He studied at the Pennsylvania State University between 1987 and 1990 and earned his MS in Experimental Psychology in 1988 and his Ph.D. degree in Physiological Psychology in1990. Dr. Hu has been teaching biological psychology at Humboldt State University since 1990.
Dr. Hu’s research interests has centered around the physiological index of motion sickness and psychophysiological responses of emotion. For over a decade, Dr. Hu has investigated the causes, physiological responses, physiological mechanisms, prevention, and treatment of motion sickness. He has found that repeated exposure to motion sickness provoking stimulation eventually decreases or eliminates the symptoms of motion sickness for most people. He believes this type adaptation training as the best treatment for motion sickness.
Dr. Hu’s most recent research has focused on physiological responses to viewing emotion-inducing photographs. He has been investigating the effects of voluntarily generating certain facial muscular actions on changes in facial EMG activity. He is interested in observing if these facial muscular actions will cause subjective reports of emotions and if voluntarily performing these facial expressions will facilitate an actual emotional reaction to the presentation of emotion provoking stimuli.
Dr. Hu was honored by Humboldt State University as the recipient of the 2000-2001 Scholar of the Year Award for the significant local, national, and international contributions he has made to the field of Psychophysiology.
Dr. Hu's teaching interests include introductory psychology, biological basis of psychology, biopsychology, psychophysiology, health psychology, and drug use and abuse. Dr. Hu believes that the major objective of teaching is to provide students with the most recent information on current research and theories relevant to the topics they are studying, to guide students in more effectively reaching their reading assignments, and to motivate students toward thinking creatively on a variety of psychological issues.
Dr. Hu views teaching as a service provided by me to my students and this service is available when my students find it necessary. Dr Hu has provided students first hand research experience by inviting students to participate in a variety of research projects. He often brings these research results into class lectures and discussions to enhance understanding of the fundamentals of the discipline of psychology. He teaches students how to write a review paper, to form a hypothesis, to design an experiment, to run an experiment, and to write a report for publication. Dr Hu believes the role of a professor in the university is to apply his/her knowledge and skills to promote the students' learning potential through effective classroom teaching and research supervision.
