Office of the Registrar

Continuing student registration for summer/fall 2008 begins April 1 and ends April 13. Late registration begins April 14 and ends September 22, 2008. Please be sure that your advisees are aware of the web registration aspects noted below. Thank you.

A FEW HELPFUL NOTES...

Access your advisees' Web Registration Status Form through your Web for Faculty account (click on "Advisors Menu" from the navigation bar. Then click on "View Advisee's Web Registration Status"). This form is also available to your students through their own web account.

You have also been provided a list of your advisees that includes their Registration Access Code. You are your advisee's only source of their registration date, time, and access code. This is done to encourage advising. During your advising appointment, please give the access code and web registration date/time to your advisee. Access codes determine the specific day and time the student may begin their registration for classes on the web. Each student's registration starting time is based upon his/her class level and units earned (including transfer units) at the end of his/her last term of attendance. In progress work is not included for any students.

The Registration Guides and Course Listings are available on the web. For the most current course availability, please direct your advisees to check the course listing on the web www.humboldt.edu/~oaa/classes.shtml

Undergraduate students will be limited to 16 units when early registration starts in April 2008. The maximum units will be raised to 19 on Saturday, August 23. Increase of maximum units allowed as of August 23 is authorized by you. Using the printer-friendly link located on the advisee's web registration status page, print the page, write the new maximum units allowed and sign. The student takes the approved form to your department office to make the change in Banner. Exception: Students limited (because of their Academic Standing) to 12 maximum units by the Office of the Registrar must contact the Academic Information & Referral (AIR) Center, SBS 133, with any questions regarding their unit limit.

DARS (Degree Audit Reports for Students) G.E. and overall requirement degree audits are available to students and advisors on the web (for students with a catalog of fall 2003 or later). Major specific audits (includes ALL degree information) are also available for anthropology, art, biology, botany, business, English, environmental science, environmental resources engineering, fisheries biology, forestry, history, journalism, kinesiology, Native American studies, natural resources planning & interpretation, nursing, oceanography, philosophy, psychology, rangeland resource science, wildland soil science, social work, wildlife, and zoology (also for students with a catalog of fall 2003 or later). Questions about DARS? Email dars@humboldt.edu

SANE (Seat Availability Notification By Email) allows students to indicate on the web that they want notification when a seat becomes newly available. An email message is sent automatically when room in the course is available. Students may then attempt to register.

A MAGIC NUMBER is used in place of an instructor's signature and is issued to the student by the instructor of the course. Please see What is a Magic Number for more information.

HOLDS??? Many students may not be aware that a university hold exists which prevents registration. University holds are noted on a student's Web Registration Status page. A link is provided for the student to view the holds. Please confirm that your advisees have cleared their holds prior to registration. Students must contact the appropriate office to clear any holds before they may register.

GOT EMAIL? All students are required to confirm their "preferred" email address as part of registration. University correspondence, including their verified fall 2008 class schedule and billing statement, will be sent to the "preferred" email address. If a student needs assistance in setting up a university email account, please refer them to the computing HELP desk, 826-4357.

Pre-Requisite checking is enforced for particular courses through registration. In the class schedule there is a column in the course listings titled "Pre Req." If there is a "Y" in this column next, a pre-requisite(s) is required. If a student has not met a course requirement(s) as listed in the HSU catalog, they will not be allowed to register and will get a "Preq and Test Score-Error" message. The instructor may issue a Magic Number to override the pre-requisite. A student who believes the pre-requisite message is in error can check with staff in the Academic Information & Referral (AIR) Center, SBS 133.

When a student registers for variable unit courses, the system automatically registers him/her into the LOWEST number of units available for the course. The student may change the unit amount via the web.

A student can change a class letter grade option to credit/no credit (as course structure allows) on the web. The deadline to change a course to optional credit/no-credit is October 20, 2008 for the fall semester.

Remediation requirements and eligibility for math and English are noted on each student's Web Registration Status Form. When remediation is required, the student MUST sign up for the required course(s). The registration process will route the student to a special page to register for the required remediation course(s) BEFORE they register for anything else. Students must "build" the rest of their schedule around the required course(s).

During registration, registration assistance will be available at computer stations in the AIR Center, SBS 133. Please call 826-4103 if you have specific questions regarding the registration process. Additional information is available in the "Registration Guide."
