What is a Magic Number?

A Magic Number gives a student the ability to enroll in a class that requires approval by the class instructor or the department chair.

Magic Numbers are used in place of instructor approval signatures and consist of a letter-number combination. For example, T45093 or M39729. To obtain a Magic Number, see the instructor of the course you wish to take. Enter the Magic Number in place of a CRN on the Register or Add/Drop Classes page in web registration. A Magic Number can only be used once.

When is a Magic Number needed?

  • When instructor or department chair approval is required.
  • When a course has restrictions (such as level, major, and prerequisites) and the student does not meet the criteria but has received instructor approval to enroll. “0” section courses always require a Magic Number.
  • When the course is filled to capacity and the instructor is willing to enroll an additional student.
