Extended Education / Open
University
Enrollment in Open University allows one to sample regular university courses, get a head start on college while still in high school/community college, continue education while establishing residency.
Participants complete an extended education registration form and select courses from the regular schedule of classes. If space is available at the first class meeting, they have the instructor and departmental office sign the form, then turn in the form and pay the fees at the Extended Education Office (Student and Business Services Building, second floor).
Matriculated students (admitted to Humboldt State University and eligible to register for the current semester) may not enroll through the Open University program, but may register for other Extension courses. Matriculated students register for Extension courses through the Office of Extended Education (not via web registration) and must pay the stated course fee. Also, regularly enrolled students who are academically disqualified from HSU are not eligible to enroll in coursework through Extended Education.
Graduate students needing to maintain continuous enrollment should contact the office of Research and Graduate Studies for guidance.
Extended Education offers (with no admission requirements) courses for professional development, for meeting professional licensing requirements, or for maintaining health and physical conditioning. The office will even design courses especially for the needs of community organizations.
Courses range from teacher skill enhancement to organic gardening, from music to computers, from Travelearn to a tax preparer’s institute. Register and pay fees at the Extended Education office, Student and Business Services Building. For the coming semester’s extension bulletin, call (707) 826-3731.
Registration in Extended Education and/or Open University courses is available through the Office of Extended Education, SBS 211. Students eligible to enroll as continuing matriculated students are not eligible to register through the Open University program. Please check the current Extended Education bulletin for further details regarding registration and listings of Extended Education and Open University offerings.
The following limits apply to units earned through the Extended Education and Open University programs: A maximum of 24 semester units of Extension courses are allowed to count toward a bachelor’s degree; these units do not count toward the residency requirement. There is a maximum of 24 semester units of Open University courses allowed to count toward a bachelor’s degree (these also count toward the residency requirement). A maximum of 9 units of Open University courses can be included in a graduate program, but do not count toward the residency requirement.

Open University units that are included on the approved master’s program for graduate students will be included in Humboldt State graduate level units earned and grade point average calculation at the time the student advances to candidacy.
