Redwood Empire Mathematics Tournament

In order to recognize achievement and to increase interest in mathematics, the Redwood Empire Mathematics Tournament is held every spring on the campus of Humboldt State University. The Tournament was founded in 1960 by Dr. James E. Householder.

The sixty-first annual event will be held on March 7th, 2020. Coaches register here.

We accept registrants on the day of the competition - but to help with our planning, please register by March 4 if possible.

Check-in begins at 8:45am in the BSS Lobby. The first test starts at 9:40. The day ends by 4pm.

Lunch tickets to the J will be on sale for $6 at the registration table. Donations to support the contest are also gratefully accepted.

Junior and senior high schools are invited to select participants from the seventh through twelfth grades, according to criteria determined by that school.

The prizes are of a mathematical nature and are as numerous as possible. The policy on prizes is to have a broad basis for awards so that as many of the students as possible receive an interesting, enjoyable, and educationally useful prize celebrating his or her skill and ability. It is hoped that at least two-thirds of the participants will receive an appropriate prize. The Elvada Trautmann Mathematics Scholarship, in the amount of $500, is awarded to the leading senior whose first year of college is at Humboldt State University.

The tests given cover the material usually taught in the relevant grades. The questions are designed to measure reasoning ability apart from computational skills. The best preparation for the Tournament is the mastery of fundamental course work. Calculators are permitted on the tests; calculators should be brought by the students or provided by their schools.

After the last test, participants and their supporting adults are invited to a mathematically-oriented talk. Various members of the University Mathematics Department and other math enthusiasts are available for conversation, comment, and exchange of ideas.
