Use/History

This is one of two identical baths used for controlling the temperature of various apparatus in the physical and analytical chemistry laboratories. One was routinely connected to thermally jacketed cuvette-holders in the Cary 14 and Beckman DU spectrophotometers during kinetics experiments. They were also used with thermally jacketed cells with Rudolph precision polarimeter for doing the kinetics of mutarotation and, of course, for controlling temperature for the B&L Abbe 3L refractometer. The catalog scan is courtesy of Van Waters and Rogers, Catalog 69 Scientific Apparatus instruments and supplies for: Industrial, Educational, Clinical and Research Laboratories. San Francisco (1968) p 281.

The precision circulating water bath was developed for controlling the temperature in refractometers, but is also used to provide precision temperature control for other applications requiring precisely controlled temperature, such askinetics experiments etc. Examples of pre-electric systems are described in early Zeiss refractometer manuals, e.g. 1907 and 1931. A photo of a B&L Abbe 3L refractometer connected to a bath like the current specimen is shown in the B&L manual.

Description

The instrument stands (under construction). Serial numbers and ID numbers can be seen in an image of the Manufacturer label and HSU tags.

An instruction and description sheets from the manufacturer is available as scans.

A Micro-Set thermoregulator, described as catalog number 61847 in the BKH Catalog 69 Scientific Apparatus instruments and supplies for: Industrial, Educational, Clinical and Research Laboratories. San Francisco (1968) p 1021 is used to set the temperature.

1 HSC property number 44918 shows a purchase date of 1971 on the HSU property inventory, however it stands in for a similar bath that can be seen in a 1957 photograph.
