• Humboldt State Athletics offers service projects within the community through our Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Student Volunteers are always welcome to participate in the community service projects that SAAC leads.

Center Activities would like to extend an invitation for students to take advantage of one of the most comprehensive university recreational activity programs available. Center Activities is a non-profit organization that provides classes in outdoor, aquatic, and leisure activities to all abilities and ages. Join one of our classes for a memorable and rewarding experience.

Outdoor Adventures

• Center Activities has over twenty years of experience providing the campus and local community with opportunities to enjoy the outdoors while developing outdoor leadership and teaching skills. The outdoor adventures program offers a variety of outdoor recreational activities including backpacking, rock climbing, adventure photography, outdoor skills, cross country skiing, many skill seminars, and many Spring Break Alternatives.
• Our outings provide recreation and instruction with a diverse group of experienced instructors. Our friendly staff can help you learn proper outdoor skills in a variety of environments. Trip logistics such as location, transportation, equipment, instruction and guides are all organized through the Outdoor Adventures Program. We can make getting away for a weekend or during a break an easy and enjoyable experience. Bring a friend or meet new friends. Aquatic Adventures

• Regional boating safety center for the North Coast and is supported by the California Department of Boating and Waterways. The Department allocates funds for boating facilities, boating safety education and boating law enforcement throughout California. Center Activities’ aquatics equipment inventory is also funded by Cal - Boating to enhance boating safety education in Northern California. Canoeing, certification courses, river kayaking, river rafting, sailing, sea kayak tours, sea kayaking, Spring Break Alternatives, Surfing, and Windsurfing.
• The aquatic adventures program provides a variety of boating instruction courses in canoeing, rafting, surfing, sailing, windsurfing, sea kayaking and river kayaking. All trip logistics including location, transportation, equipment, instruction, and guides are organized by Center Activities.

Leisure Activities

• Leisure activities are intended for personal enrichment and skill acquisition and welcome both HSU students and community members. Courses that are traditionally offered encompass the arts, movement, skills and training, and certification classes. Art, skills and training, certification courses, martial arts, mind body and spirit music and theater, wilderness certification courses.
• Center Activities leisure instructors are highly qualified and bring with them extensive experience to their unique course offerings. Anyone with teaching experience is encouraged to apply to offer a leisure course through Center Activities, which constantly strives to bring a wide variety of extracurricular activities to the local community.

• The HSU Day of Caring takes place each year on the third Saturday in September. It’s an exciting event that brings hundreds of HSU students together to perform a half-day of service throughout the community. • The Volunteer Opportunities Program is a Y.E.S. program coordinated by Service Learning Interns. Visit Y.E.S. or the Service Learning Center to sign up for monthly one-time service events at which you can make a difference in the community! The Service Learning Center works to support connections among faculty, students, and community partners through Service Learning courses and Academic Internships on campus.
• Service Learning Interns (SLIs) work throughout the year on additional projects such as annual food drives and the Fall H.O.P. Service / Outdoor Adventure Day. SLIs can also help you find community volunteer work on your own time.

• Latino Peer Mentoring is about building friendships while learning. It is also about getting involved in academic and cultural clubs, recreational activities, and community organizations. While the focus is on developing connections, it is also about discovering how to advocate for yourself, having a voice in the academic community, and learning how to balance school, personal, and family commitments.
• HSU students can attend the LPM kick-off bonfire at Clam Beach, learn about important Latin@ topics at the annual LPM Research Colloquium’s poster board presentations, and attend Latin@ film nights and participate in follow-up dialogue among peers.
• Students enroll in a one-unit mentoring class led by students who are connected with the Latino community. You can participate in the Latino Peer Mentoring Program in addition to any Freshmen First Year Experience, EOP, Fall Bridge, or residential learning community. The mentors know about some of the challenges that students face when attending college far from family or find the surrounding community is very different from home.
• Activities may include guest speaker presentations, an enchilada dinner, games and a bonfire at the beach, a Homecoming BBQ, scavenger hunts, time management workshops, Arcata bus tours, and simply making dinner together.

• The HSU Sport Club Program consists of 15 highly competitive sport club teams. Each club team is developed, organized, and managed by students with guidance from the Recreational Sports Director, Sport Club Coordinator, and club team coaches.
• The emphasis for sport club activities is leadership. Sport Clubs are an excellent setting for the development of athletic skills, student leadership, and social outlets. Each club team's success is determined by the collective efforts and organization of the student athletes.
• The Sports Club Program offers all regularly enrolled students an opportunity to participate at a competitive collegiate level. New and experienced athletes are actively recruited – many sport club athletes have never played their sport before joining an HSU team.

• The Health & Wellness Education department in Student Health and Wellness Services is a place where students can consult one-on-one with a health educator or peer educator and get information on a wide variety of student health issues; including (but not limited to): sexual health, nutrition, body image, sexual assault, alcohol and other drugs, and stress relief.
• We also provide free safer sex supplies and plan many different campus wide events around issues of health and wellness focused on redefining the idea of what “healthy” means through a lens of social justice.

Programs

• Students are invited to participate in all programs sponsored by Residence Life and the Resident Housing Association (RHA). Throughout the year, Residence Life Staff and various student leaders organize social events like movie screening and dance parties along with educational programs focused on social justice, environmental responsibility, and academics. Every week we have multiple events in the residence halls in which students can build community and become an engaged member of the campus community.
• During Welcome Home to Humboldt, Residence Life hosts several large events to welcome residents back to campus. Some of these events include: STOMP, Cypress Lawn Movie Screening, Hill Carnival, and Canyon Music Jam. In October Residence Life collaborates with Campus Dialogue on Race to put on Tunnel of Oppression, an interactive event focused on social justice education. In spring, students come together to sing, dance and get silly at one of our favorite programs, Mock Rock.

Councils

• All students living in the residence halls are eligible members of all councils in housing. There are councils in each residence hall area and every resident has voting rights at their respective councils. There are also social, interests and identity based councils in union all Residents are eligible to participate.
• Residents may choose to be part of the council or just come to vote on issues they care about. They are also welcome to come to any event, open forum, or mixer the council’s host. In additional, councils are a great place for students to bring their concerns and get community support in addressing a problem.

Volunteer Opportunities

• Students interested in volunteering in the community can get connected to service events through Residence Life. We organize several large service events throughout the year. Every year on Martin Luther King Jr day and Cesar Chavez day we do a large service project at places like Betty Chin’s mission in Eureka or the Manila Community Center. There are also weekly service events such as the Potawat Community Garden service that happens every Friday.
• Throughout the semester there are also beach clean-ups, forest clean-ups, habitat restorations, and tons of other opportunities to give back the community.

• TRiO Upward Bound is home to the HSU TRiO Alum Center and the TRiO Alumni Association club on campus. The center is a space where students can come to take a break from classes, use our computer lab, study for midterms and exams, have lunch, use our food bank, book library, or any of our office equipment: fax, phone, copy machine, school supplies, etc.
• The TriO Alum Center is a great place to meet other students from TriO programs. The center is growing slowly but surely and aims to provide a service to give back to the TRiO community in terms of student led workshops, presentations, and panels. In addition, job postings for mentors, instructors, and tutors are posted in the center for students interested in employment.

• Youth Educational Services (YES) houses over fourteen student-directed volunteer programs that provide services to a broad age spectrum ranging from youth to the elderly. Volunteers spend time in the community building friendships and working together to meet community needs. They learn about issues facing our diverse community andengage in reflection activities about their services.
