The Humboldt State University Strategic Plan for 2004-2009 clarifies a vision for this university to "be renowned for social and environmental responsibility and action." To achieve this vision, the campus strategic plan sets a goal of "develop[ing] a well-defined, signature All-University Curriculum that incorporates the development of strong skills, interdisciplinary experiences, and service/experiential learning."
The Service Learning/Experiential Education (SL/CE) Advisory Committee works to make the vision and goal of the campus strategic plan a reality. SL/CE is a university committee that reports directly to both the Provost/Vice-President of Academic Affairs and the Vice-President of Student Affairs, and the committee has been working since Fall Semester 1998 to increase support for service learning and experiential education across campus. The SL/CE committee includes representatives from each college, the student body, the community, and staff from Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, the Career Center, and the Service Learning Center Staff. The committee was created as a result of the unanimous passage of the Service Learning Initiative by the Academic Senate in 1995. The initiative is based on recommendations from the University Curriculum Committee and includes a mandate to develop guidelines for courses that utilize service learning in order to meet community-identified needs while developing critical thinking skills, a commitment to values, and skills for effective citizenship.
