INSTRUCTOR

Jeremiah Mann in natural setting  Jeremiah Mann

I am a Ph.D. student at the University of California in Davis in the Plant Sciences department. My academic and professional interests are California plant communities and plant ecology, soil ecology and plant-soil interactions, restoration ecology and agroecology. My research effort focuses on pre-introduction screening of Miscanthus x giganteus and Panicum virgatum. These two grasses are potentially California's first dedicated biofuel crops. My goal is to evaluate available miscanthus biotypes, and to a less extent Panicum virgatum, that minimize risk of escaping cultivation and causing environmental damage. Other research activities focus on developing effective management strategies for plant invasions and methods for restoration in grasslands.

I assisted with the Sierra Institute course, California Wilderness: Nature Philosophy, Religion, Ecopsychology, in summer 2002, and went on to co-teach the High Sierra course in 2006. In addition to my experience with Sierra Institute, I have worked in several natural resource management related fields. These include restoration of large rivers in California, fighting fire with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and performing research investigating novel ways of producing electricity at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Given the varied activities in which I have been fortunate enough to participate, some of my most rewarding experiences have been learning and teaching in the Sierra Nevada.

The High Sierra: Natural History Field Studies course provides a great opportunity for academic, physical and emotional growth. I look forward to deepening my experience in the Sierra Nevada high country and facilitating students in their process of learning about the natural history of the central and southern Sierra. I welcome you to participate in the High Sierra course and look forward to the time when we will meet and walk into the Sierra together.
