My background and training is in trauma-focused psychotherapy and drug and alcohol treatment. I earned my MSW from the University of Pennsylvania, where I worked within a children's crisis treatment center, juvenile detention, and alternative schools. In 2005, I sold most of my belongings and drove West to work as a wilderness therapist. I spent 5 years working in expedition-based treatment, taking groups of teens out on 21-day backpacking expeditions as an alternative to brick-and-mortar residential treatment. During that time, I swore I would never work a desk job. These days, I work in an office as the Director of Social Services at Hospice of Humboldt. It's not so bad.
