“United, Undocumented, Unafraid!”
Building Strong Communities through Vision, Knowledge and Empowerment
March 1 & 2, 2013
Humboldt State University
Our vision for this year’s Social Justice Summit is to continue the focus on the struggle of all people who face the challenges of undocumented status. We hope to provide the needed resources to encourage and change the way our campus and community interprets having undocumented status. We all face struggles in our lives but have various options and strategies to overcome them, unlike someone who does not have the same rights that we are given as citizens of this country. Undocumented people who have continued to work and contribute to society remain marginalized and sometimes seen ascriminals.
It is important for us to acknowledge these people and let their voices be heard. Currently, legislation has changed and allowed students some rights. It is not to say that struggle is over. There are others who still remain in the shadows – mothers, fathers, grandparents, and simply those who are not privileged to be students.
We want to see HSU become an institution of higher education that fully supports students with undocumented status. We want to see HSU have all the resources to assist our faculty and staff in their support of undocumented students and their academic success. We can all work towards these goals, and the first step is participation in the 2013 Social Justice. Please join us March 1 & 2, 2013. We look forward to meeting you and working with you.
