Welcome

2012 Social Justice Summit

"Give our DREAM a chance"
Undocumented students coming out of the shadow of oppression towards the light of higher education
March 2 & 3, 2011
Humboldt State University

We all want our dreams to come true. Whether it is our dream to become a famous athlete, a lawyer or a doctor we all dream on doing something great with our lives. However, much too often the simple notion of a higher education, which is the dream of 65,000 annual high school graduates, is met by hardships and obstacles that make this dream quickly become a nightmare. Many times when these students seek help to achieve this goal they are met with hesitation because of countless misconceptions & misinformation that’s being spread in our society. That is why this year's annual Social Justice Summit will be a resource for undocumented students and allies.

This year’s summit will not only focus on immigration but we will also explore the intersectionalities of oppression.

We want to bridge the gap between Humboldt State University and the local community. For many, college is not an option, and at times we are led to believe institutionalized academia will uplift our community. There is an immense amount of crucial knowledge that will never be written, nor will it ever be read in a book. We must also have a space for those who are working for change outside of the school walls so that critical learning can happen on and off campus. We want to open Humboldt State's doors to those who might not get a chance to step in other wise. We want our dreamers to have a voice and we want our DREAM(s) to be given a chance.

What is your dream?

Our dream is to live and live well. Our dream is to help our community. Our dream is to enjoy our friends, our family, and not work so much, that we hardly have time to bond. Our dream is to go out and have fun without the fear of judgment from society. Our dream is to hold our partner's hand, regardless of their sex, gender, race or any other type of category that society labels them under. Our dream is to eat real food, not just consume a substance that only suppresses our hunger. Our dream is not to be the victims of violence. Our dream is being seen as a person not as an object. Our dream is to love our selves, our bodies, and our partners without being afraid. We need our voices to be heard and our stories to be told. We will no longer hide behind the shadows on the margins of society. We want to be seen, we want to be heard, we want justice.
