2014 Social Justice Summit

Want to host a workshop to raise awareness on a specific issue you are passionate about?

Well, here’s your chance! Even if you have no experience hosting a workshop we invite you to submit a proposal for this year’s Social Justice Summit.

The 2014 summit organizers are looking for dynamic and interactive workshops for this year’s Social Justice Summit. The workshops will be divided into either:

Education/Knowledge Share workshops, where we will work together to identify and educate ourselves about important issues that are affecting our communities and what we can do to bring about change.

and

Art Activism/Skill Share workshops where Artist/Activist will share and teach us their skills to provide us with powerful tools that we can use to spread awareness and encourage social change.

Education/Knowledge Share Curriculum

Workshops are 1.5 hours in length and are a lecture or discussion pertaining to the theme of the summit. Here are ideas/guidelines for workshop proposals:

  • Support for Undocumented Students

  • Intersectionality of Identities
    Multicultural Queer Studies

  • Learning Truth
    Decolonization of Education

  • Teaching for Social Justice
    Integrating Social Justice into Curriculum

  • Expanding Knowledge of Our Communities in Struggle
    Such as immigration, environmental racism, etc.

  • Deconstructing Privilege
    And more

Art Activism/Skill Share

Workshops are 3 hours or 1.5 hours in length and go beyond discussion by sharing skills and techniques involved in direct action. Here are ideas/guidelines for workshop proposal:

  • Wheat-pasting
  • Graf Writing
  • Poetry
  • Spoken Word
  • Film-making
  • Silk Screening & Stenciling
  • Community Organizing
  • Guerilla Theatre/Theatre of the Oppressed
  • Mural-ing
  • and more

We highly recommend that your workshop title be “catchy”. Please fill out the Call for Proposal form and submit online or send a hard copy to the MCC—1 Harpst Street, Arcata, CA 95521. Deadline for workshop proposals is Friday, February 7, 2014 at 5:00 PM. Acceptance notifications will be sent out via email by Friday, February 14, 2014.
