FREN 326 Culture & Civilization in Morocco (2)

Field experience in Morocco: December 20 through January 17

  • Students will attend afternoon lecture-discussion sessions of 90 minutes to two hours in English on relevant issues in Moroccan culture.
  • Cultural studies at the Center for Cross-Cultural Learning are taken into the streets of Rabat where, with instructors, students experience the culture of historic sites of and around the capital of Rabat.
  • An important, though not strictly “instructional,” element of Moroccan culture is the experience of immersion of the family stay, where students may be speaking French, a few expressions in Modern Standard Arabic and Moroccan Arabic, or possibly English, according to the family-specific linguistic environment and each student’s linguistic preparation. Students experience family life, meals, daily routines, special holidays, and non-academic perspectives of society.
  • The extensive cultural immersion continues to Meknes, Volubilis, Fes, Erfoud, Merzouga, Midelt, Nkob, Marrake3ch and Essaouira. Students travel with their instructors to different geographical and cultural regions of Morocco, including the desert, the Atlas Mountains, the countryside and the coast. Instructors prepare students to understand cultural and geographical sites during travel and on-site.
  • The final project of the field experience begins in Morocco with early process-writing of the analysis of two cultural/civilization issues, events, sites or themes that particularly interested each student personally. Beyond the fieldwork experience at its source, each paper in its final version should include relevant historical, technical, political, or testimonial information and/or texts.
HSU campus sessions Jan. 20 – March 13
  • Weekly 1 - hour classroom sessions begin with discussions of elements of culture and civilization in Morocco as students perceived them during their field experience. This course component will be student-directed, with the active participation of our Fulbright Arabic/French Language Teaching Assistant as respondent, answering questions and expanding on student interests in culture and civilization.
  • Students will continue process-writing of their culture/civilization papers, in consultation with their professor and teaching assistant, completing the final drafts by Feb. 12.
  • Three sessions will be devoted to the preparation of a university presentation of student-selected topics related to their field experience in Morocco.
  • Assessment of this course is based on the two final papers (70%), class participation and discussion in HSU campus sessions (10%), and the all-university presentation, which serves as the final project of the course (20%).
