Subject:  Fall 05 Interdisciplinary Technology Facility Changes & Faculty Orientations Invitation

The staff of Academic Computing would like to invite you to preview the upgrades we have implemented for the Fall 2005 Semester.  One of the more notable changes will be the addition of floppy drives to several labs lacking.  While we still feel the floppy disk is technologically obsolete and highly error prone, we have listened to Ffaculty and student comments and have addedare adding floppy drives.  Our recommendation is still to encourage switching to “key-chainUSB flash drives and avoiding floppy and zip diskettesfor file storage that have, which have higher failure rates.

Our ‘On Horizon’ sites located in Gist Hall H218 and in the Faculty Technology Solution Center (FTSC) located in Siemens Hall H1 will be available on April 29 for testing upcoming Fall application changes.  The stations in GH218 are near the main door, on the aisle ends; stations GH218/ 2A for Macintosh and GH218/3A for Windows. In the FTSC the ‘On Horizon’ stations are [Kim-need to add those here]

All Interdisciplinary Technology Facilities will be available August 10th, 11th, 12th, 15th, and 16th for orientation and live testing of your assignments and lab equipment. Please contact contact Academic Computing at x4200your Lab Manager (see list below) to schedule testing time in any Interdisciplinary Technology Facility. A staff member staff member will meet you at the appointed time and location.  In addition, the new Faculty Technology Solution Center in Siemens Hall 1 is openis available for Faculty testing of coursework and can also be scheduled by calling x4200.

As you may know, Academic Computing staff has been fully supporting disciplinary software in addition to the standard software collection.  If you have any questions about this initiative, feel free to contact your a Lab Manager.

In addition, Academic Computing staff would like to begin making contact with faculty members who assign course work to their students but do not usually schedule computer labs.  We are interested in what type of software you require your students to use to complete their assignments and what proportion of your students might frequent the University’s Interdisciplinary Technology Facilities.
