Subject:  Fall ‘08 Interdisciplinary Computing Lab and Smart Classroom Information

The staff of Information Technology Services in Desktop IT would like to give you a preview of major upgrades and changes being planned for fall 2008 implementation. A number of these changes may affect course scheduling.

Harry Griffith Hall Remodel
The remodel of Harry Griffith Hall is nearing completion. The building is expected to be available for fall 2008 courses. There will be several Smart Classrooms as well as one 25 workstation Interdisciplinary Computing Lab.

Library 21 – Family Friendly Lab Relocated
The Family Friendly Lab, formerly in Annex 123, has been relocated to Library Basement 21. Six iMac workstations are now available in Library 21. Children accompanying student parents may watch their favorite VHS tape or DVD on the TV installed in the lab. Printing capability is expected to be available fall 2008.

Founders Hall 202 & Jenkins Hall 212 Upgrade
Founders Hall 202 and Jenkins Hall 212 are scheduled for new equipment this summer. All workstations will be upgraded to 20” Intel iMacs. In addition to Macintosh applications these workstations will be capable of running Windows applications. Development of the Intel set up is in progress and is expected to be available during fall 2008.

Macintosh OS Update
The latest Macintosh operating system, Leopard, will be ready for use this coming Fall. For a preview, drop by Gist Hall 218 and take a look at our “On Horizon” Macintosh station. You will find a test set up of Leopard on workstation 2B. Please let us know what you think.

Vista OS Scheduled
Installation of the latest Microsoft operating system, Vista, has been tentatively scheduled for Fall 2009. During the ‘08-’09 academic year, software applications currently in use are being tested for compliance with the new operating system. Appropriate equipment upgrades as well as training materials are under development. Test systems will become available for examination during spring term 2009.

Updates to the standard software image will be posted on the Desktop IT web site at http://www.humboldt.edu/~ac/software/. You can use the search tool to look up specific software or peruse the standard software list.

If you have any questions or input, please contact us at ext. 4357 or by email at labs@humboldt.edu. Thank you very much for your time.
