Subject: Preview for New Standard Software in Interdisciplinary Technology Facilities
The Academic Computing staff is preparing plans for future Standard Software upgrades. Installation in the Interdisciplinary Technology Facilities is being planned for Summer 2004 and scheduled to go live for Fall 2004 term. The intent is to give sufficient time for advanced planning and testing.
New versions of software for the Windows environment have recently been released. Those versions are; Minitab 14, Office 2003 Professional, Office FrontPage 2003, SPSS 12 and Visual Studio .NET (version 2003). Mac OS X version 10.3.1 (Panther) was released late in October with a number of updates; Finder, Preview and Safari.
With this announcement, Academic Computing has planned a two-station test site (one each) for Windows XP and Mac OS X. The planned location will be Gist Hall 218 and both platforms should be installed by the end of the Fall 2003 term. This site will enable faculty to come test new software in a similar environment as what will be installed in the Interdisciplinary teaching facilities. We are interested in faculty input about the proposed platforms and will be making test systems available for faculty and student use.
Academic Computing has also planned a link on our website for announcements of planned software and hardware upgrades:

Information found at this URL will describe future upgrade plans and proposed timelines. Advance notices of updates should help individuals determine the interaction between hardware/software and course material. If a change or addition is made to the update list, an email message will automatically be sent to faculty listed in the class schedule for the Interdisciplinary Technology Facilities. In addition, a news item will be placed in the weekly University Notices that goes out over email.
If you have any questions about this project please contact the Laboratory System Manager for the laboratory where you teach or Academic Computing, ext.4200.
