Subject:      Operating System Upgrade Project for Interdisciplinary Technology Facilities

This spring term, Windows XP (Win XP) operating system has been undergoing a live test in Siemens Hall 118 and has been successfully used by twelve classes. The upgrade to Win XP will provide a more modern, efficient, and stable operating system in the interdisciplinary technology facilities. Win XP will also offer better compatibility with new applications.

This project is now proceeding to the next phase. Barring any unforeseen technical problems, budgetary difficulties, and committee approval, we anticipate completing the update to Win XP on all PC platforms by the start of fall term. Facilities will be updated throughout the summer.

Macintosh OS X (OS X) will also be installed during the summer. Installation will be completed in all Macintosh facilities by the fall, if there are no technical or budgetary difficulties. Prototype OS X installations are available for review; contact Academic Computing, ext. 4200, to make an appointment.

The Mac Classic (OS 9) environment will not be installed with the OS X update. The performance of the Classic environment is not acceptable for production purposes at HSU. We have consulted with CSU staff at several campuses with experience working in the OS X environment. Most Mac Classic problems involved performance issues. For example, older applications crashed randomly and performed poorly. There were no solutions to any of these problems. Vendors recommended purchasing the OS X native versions of their applications, as Classic is no longer being developed for.  The option of running Classic in the OS X environment could compromise the security of OSX files and allow full control.

Netscape Navigator has continued to be a support problem. The appropriate version of Netscape Navigator will not allow installation of the browser alone. With this next operating system update, Netscape Navigator will be dropped from the supported software suite.
