ADVISOR BULLETIN

MARCH 2008

ADVISING FOR REGISTRATION BEGAN MARCH 11: REGISTRATION FOR CONTINUING STUDENTS APRIL 1-13. Late registration fees will be charged for continuing student registration after April 14.

Do you have your advisee list with registration access codes and dates/times of registration? If not, check with your department’s Academic Support Coordinator.

Class Schedule & Registration Guide is no longer printed…but it is available in its entirety online. Go to http://www.humboldt.edu/~oaa/classes.shtml, and check it out! Great advantage—the class listing section will be updated daily! If you like having the front section of the Class Schedule in hard copy for a handy reference (we do), there is a pdf version that you can print.

Regular unit cap changed from 19 to 16…undergraduates who want to register for more than 16 units will need to wait until the weekend before school starts (8/23 to be exact) when the cap will be raised to 19. For those who want to register for more than 19 units, they can do so, but it will have to be on or after the first day of instruction, and will require advisor approval. Department coordinators can lift the limit. However, where there are rules, there are exceptions. If you have a senior advisee registering for his/her very last term who needs more than 16 units in order to graduate, send the student to the AIR Center (SBS 133). Staff will check out the senior’s remaining requirements and make adjustments as necessary. If the graduating senior needs to add more than 19 units make sure he/she has a signed note from you approving the amount.

Diversity and Common Ground and General Education double counting cheat sheet…as you know lots of DCG courses also meet GE requirements, but which ones, and are they offered next semester? The Advising Center has a new advising “cheat” sheet. It lists the DCG/GE double counting courses, days, times, and which areas of GE each DCG course covers, and includes domestic/non-domestic info. It’s available as a handout at the Advising Center, and on our website at http://www.humboldt.edu/~advise/Fall_08DoubleCountList.htm.

Check out the Online Advisor Handbook: It’s available at http://www.humboldt.edu/~advise/Advisors.htm. We hope you’ll find all essential advising information you need at your fingertips. Bookmark it now to use during the advising-heavy weeks to come. Any suggestions you have for improvements, please let us know.

Can’t find the information you need for your advisee in the handbook? Please call us at 826-5224. We’re open 9-5, Monday through Friday. If we don’t know the answer, we’ll do the research or refer you to the best campus resource.

Email your advisees: Remember that some of your advisees are new to Humboldt or new to their major, so may need coaching on how you go about advising. And, it seems, most of them need a reminder no matter how long they’ve been registering at Humboldt. Below are instructions for using web for faculty to email all your advisees, and a sample email for you to cut and paste if you like. It includes instructions for students to prepare for their advising appointment so both of you can use your time together effectively.

  • Go to www.humboldt.edu,
  • At top right, choose Quick Links
  • Now choose WebReg
  • Fill in your HSU ID and PIN number
  • Choose Faculty and Advisor menu
Choose Advisor Email to currently enrolled (eligible to register) advisees
  • Once in the email screen, follow the directions for supplying a subject since emails without subjects are frequently rejected as spam.
  • Compose your email (or cut, paste, and edit the one provided below), and send.

The Humboldt Online Orientation Program (HOOP) for new transfer students is scheduled to begin April 1. The Humboldt Orientation staff is currently working on streamlining the process. If you will be advising in this program, please watch for HOOP updates the week of March 24.

Innovation in General Education: We’re into our second year of the innovative pilot program that provides an exciting option for freshmen and sophomores to enroll in linked interdisciplinary GE courses on topics relevant to the Humboldt region. There are two offerings for fall ’08. ) One will be offered through FIG registration only, as it’s most appropriate for first time freshmen. The other might be a great fit for some of your freshmen or sophomores. It’s suitable for all majors in the social or natural resource sciences and students interested in social organization for disaster preparedness and learning hands-on disaster response skills. It’s called “Shake, Rattle, and Roll” and consists of FOR 100R(GE critical thinking) and GNED 109S (GE Area D). Students in this program will critically examine ways in which we organize ourselves and develop plans to respond to natural disaster situations. They will develop hands-on skills for disaster response, participate in field trips, gain practical skills and be eligible for certification in First Aid, CPR, and Emergency Management. Students must register for both courses.

Questions, concerns, comments? Please contact us. We’ll be happy to hear from you!
