ACSTAND – academic standing. For all terms, this is the student’s standing during the term as a result of the previous term’s grades.
ACTIVITY – list of comma-separated activity codes
ADBAS – basis of admission code as defined by ERS manual, see STVBAAD.
ADLEV – admission level from the application: 0=FTF, 1-4=Fr-Sr transfer, 5=postbac, 6=conditionally classified
ADMIT – has an applicant been admitted (Y or N); this will be N if they were admitted but that status has been revoked
ADDRTYPE – two character address type selected. The most common address type is MA (mailing) which the student gives us on their application or using BANWEB. Other possibilities are RE (recruiting), provided unofficially before the student matriculates, SU (summer), DI (diploma) provided on application for graduation, and TE (temporary) when a student knows their address will be changing. We do not collect parent addresses, but merely make the best guess we can from other address types. Many students do not keep their address information current, and almost none do so after graduation.
APPFEE – paid or waived the application processing fee
APSTATCODE – last admit decision code, I for Incomplete, C for Complete, or NA if no application
APSTAT – current application status
BIRTH – birth date
CENUNITS – units a student was enrolled in at census
CIPCODE – Federal CIP code (Classification of Instruction Program) connected to a student’s primary major.
CITY – city attached to address (see ADDRTYPE)
CITETHNIC – ethnicity if a citizen or immigrant, otherwise “_non res”
CLASS – class level based on units earned (30 units/class): Frosh, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Postbac
COLLEGE or COLCODE– the college code associated with the student’s major; see major and option codes for a list of majors in each college.
COUNTRY – the permanent residence
CREDSTAT – the credential status as defined by the ERS manual, see STVCDS1 in Banner.
DECDATE – the date the most recent admission decision was made. The actual decision should be in the APSTAT field
DEGREE – the primary degree objective (BA, BS, MA, MS, MFA, MSW, PBCRED, or 0 for none).
DEGSTAT – degree status (A=awarded, SO=sought, D=denied)
DEPARTMENT – description of the University department the supports the student’s major. See the list of colleges, departments, and majors.
EARNED – units earned.
EMAIL – students may supply and correct their email address at any time. Active students are required to have an email address to register. However, many students fail to maintain the current email, especially after graduation.
ENROLL – did student enroll for this term: Y or N In an applicant data file (procomm), this field indicates whether the student enrolled as a result of the application in question. In some cases, they may actually be enrolled as a result of an earlier application, but still show an N in this field (e.g. Grad applicant who didn’t graduate).
ETH – one character ethnic code from the CSU application (many, many choices)
ETHNICITY – nine categories of ethnicity (CSU breakdown). Some prospective students tell us their ethnicity before they apply to the University, but most answer this question on their application. Many students decline to provide this information or choose “Other”, which could be something like German or French or might be a combination of Black and Thai. Since we don’t have any way of knowing, “other” is considered unknown.
EXCEPT – exception admit code, see STVEXBA.
FAMINCOME – self reported family income from application, starting with D/I for dependent/independent and the code from the application.
FAMSIZE – self-reported family size from application.
GPA – cumulative grade point average, including transfer work; graduate student GPA does not include undergraduate work; this is generally a current value, even if a past term has been specified; (see XFERGPA and HSUGPA).
GROUPS – list of comma-separated service group codes that are entered on SEAASGN.
HOLDS – hold codes from Banner, see STVHLDD.
HSUEARNED – units earned at HSU.
HSUGPA – current cumulative grade point average of courses taken at HSU
HSUID – the nine digit ID assigned by the University to all individuals in our database (replaced SSN) with a hyphen between the 4th and 5th digit.
ID – this is the nine digit ID assigned by the University with no hyphen. It is included to make it easier to cut and paste IDs into Banner. Because Excel recognizes this as a number, leading zeros may get removed.
INDEPENDENT – Y or N for independent/dependent, ? if unknown.
INSTCITY – city of
institution of origin,
INSTNAME – name of institution of origin
LEV – UG/GR for undergrad or graduate student level. Graduate includes masters, credentials, 2nd bachelors, and unclassified.
MAJCODE – four digit Banner code, see STVMAJR or major and option codes
MAJOR – description of current major. (This is the “base” major, not the specific option.)
MARKET – Educational Testing Service’s geomarket code if in CA, else state code, or “Foreign” (see market report)
MATRIC – term the student first matriculated; should be blank for transitory (nonmatriculated) students.
MINOR – students may declare a minor or a second major, but are not required to do so until they apply for graduation. Because of this, the minor code information provided for current students is extremely incomplete.

ORIGDIV – the original “division” for the student: FT=first-time frosh, LD=lower division transfer, UD=upper-division transfer, PB=post-bac.
ORIGIN –institution of origin code from Banner (see STVSBGI if appears as a six character code), HS, or Colleges. May be a state or foreign country if a specific institution was not entered in Banner.
ORIGINZIP – zip code
of the institution of origin if in
PERMRES – permanent residency code from application: CA county code or state code or country code
RECRUITER – recruiting region as defined by HSU Office of Admissions
REGION – region for institution of origin defined by Educational Testing Service with 955* zips listed separately as “Local”
REGIONORD – order of region; may be used to sort reports by region
RESIDENCY – R for CA resident, N for out of state, F for foreign
SATVERB, SATMATH, SATCOMB – SAT scores
SEX – M or F
SPORTS – list of sport with a Title 9 indicator for the given academic year. If run for a during a Fall term, spring sports may not be listed, since the Title 9 indicator may not have been set yet.
STATUS – student
status; may show blank or AS for normal,
STULEV – two character code loosely based on Banner recruiting levels (STVRSTA). See the STULEVEL field for complete description.
STULEVEL – extended description of STULEV code
STULEVORD – order of student level; may be used to sort reports by stulevel.
TERM – six digit banner code, the first four digits are the year, the last two are 20, 30, or 40 for spring, summer, or fall (e.g. 200340)
TRIBE – Native American tribe affiliation; valued entered as text in SPACMNT with a TRI comment code.
UNITS – currently enrolled units, not including audited classes
TERMNAME – “friendly term name” (e.g. Fall 2003)
WEBAPSTAT – URL to check the current application status, including a list of missing items
WEBVERIFY – this is a security field that can be included in a special email hyperlink to an active HSU webpage that will identify the person accessing the page to the web site.
XFEREARNED – units transferred from other institutions.
XFERGPA – grade point average from transfer institutions; see GPA and HSUGPA
ZIP – entire zip code if contact information included, otherwise, only the first five digits are included
ZIPSORT – first five digits of zip code, included to allow sorting by zip when there might be nine digits
