COURSE DESCRIPTION

Students making acorn soup in the forestThis is a special topics course, which will include travel to the Klamath/Salmon River area for a weekend to meet with and learn from members of the Karuk Indigenous Basket Weavers and California Indian Basket Weavers Association.

Participants in this course will interact one-on-one with the basket weavers and herbalists, collect and process basket making materials, medicinal herbs and foods from local plants, and discuss indigenous life ways in relation to the local environment.

This rare opportunity will also include a visit to the Native Plants Garden, basket displays, a lecture given by a Karuk elder, an evening of Karuk storytelling, and a potluck dinner with the basket weavers.

Before the weekend activities, students will also be required to independently tour the Hover Collection of Karuk baskets at the Clarke Historical Museum in Eureka.

COURSE STRUCTURE, GRADING, ASSIGNMENTS & POLICIES

This course consists of hands-on activities and discussions, and out-of-class observations. Your participation and interest are crucial. Your grade will depend upon your level of participation, your trip journal, and the quality of the reflection paper you submit.

Please note that the grade mode for this course is Credit/No-Credit.

To get credit for this course, you have to:
(1) attend and participate in the orientation session, the full off-campus scheduled sessions, and
(2) complete a journal and reflection paper (4-6 pages in length). The reflection paper and journal expectations will be explained in the orientation session.

PREPARATION

Students are required to bring their own camping gear and food, and will be responsible for getting to the campground on their own. The weather is not predictable for this time of year so be prepared for cold and wet-weather. Be sure to bring a tent with a rain-fly. It might also be sunny and warm. See the Checklist for details.

 

APPLICATION & REGISTRATION

Only students registered for the course will be allowed to participate. Instructor approval is required for registration. The application form is at this link. Applications must be received at the Extended Education Office in the Student & Business Services building on the HSU campus by April 1, 2009.

 

FEES

Upon acceptance to the program, the academic fee of $350 for 2 units (ANTH 485) is payable at the Office of Extended Education, located on the second floor of the Student and Business Services building on Harpst St., on the HSU campus. You may also call 826-3731 to register (VISA, M/C, Discover).
